Mine was the same way.
Carefully pop the aluminmum part of the shift **** off (the part that has the 6 speed diagram on it) gently pop it off with a screw driver, then wiggle the rest of the **** (leather part) off of the shifter Patience with this, and it will wiggle off, lifting upwards.

Done and done! 2 hours, $200. and simply a terriffic mod! Amazing shifting feel and function, the way i'm sure it was meant to be. If you dont have one, get one, you wont regret it.

The directions were great, remember to mark the rods with nail polish or touch up paint. I took my shifter **** off after I removed the entire housing. A screwdriver pry and pull from both ends.

All right I got it, screwdrive trick combined with standing on bottom end and pulling,twisting and calling it all the right names! Over all just about two hours and very easy other that the ****.
