Shifting cables popping off the Trans??

Well heading accross the bridge yesterday I had my Grey shifter cable pop off the transmission, leaving me with 3rd-4th not fun!

Seemed that it popped off where the housing attaches to the trans and where the round clip unit pops on the trans, both came off at the same time.

The dealer installed new cables 5k miles ago, maybe not installed correctly?

Or do these pop off from time to time?? Should those housings be safety wired in place?

Thanks
Mark

That's unusual and I'd say maybe something didn't go right at the dealer?

I checked the tension on my short shifter, and it was a bit loose, maybe a full turn or so, It seemed like it had clearance of maybe a 1/4 inch front to back, so I set it at 1/4-1/2 turn clearance.

I just had the same problem....
I am going to check my engine and transmission mounts.
If one was bad, it may pull the cables loose....I think....
The cables snap securely in place and are tight right now.

I did however have the IM shaft seal replaced under warranty and am hoping the tech just didn't get them snapped into place correctly...

I re-intalled mine and it's been fine since, but I got 125k miles on her. And with the quick shifter I assume there was too much force. Yet mine had been in the shop for a complete new motor so mabe mine also was not installed correctly.
I sure could use a new tranny! As she is getting touchy going into 2nd.
Good luck!
Mark

There are some clips that hold them into the bracket on the trans. these can get bent and distorted when they are removed, and if reused the cable cans come loose from the brackets. This happened once on my car after a clutch change, and has now happened twice since I dropped the engine and trans. I am going to either zip tie the canble in place or replace the clips.

If my mounts are ok, I am going to use a triange file to make the clip notches a little deeper and sharper at a reverse angle to make sure they don't come loose again. The thought of tie strapping crossed my mind, but I think the file is the real fix.

Zip ties on mine too. Didn't actually come off, but were creeping out away from the trans at my 50K check up.
