RMS: Dealer or Indie?

Ok here's the deal, give me some advice on what i should do.

I got a price quote from the dealer for a new rms in my 01 cab, since i leak a pretty decent ammount of oil i factored in a new clutch at the same time. The dealers price was about $2100 for RMS, IMS, Clutch replacement with porsche 2 year warrenty.

I then called an indie who works on pretty much just porsche and VW (he races porsche). He quoted me $1200 for RMS, Clutch, and and a resurfaced flywheel (or lightweight if i wanted to supply it). He offered a 1 year warrenty.

I'm planning on moving far far away in about 6 months so the warrenty thing might be an issue if i have it done locally...that is assuming porsche dealership warrentys are valid at other dealers around the country?!?!

Who should i let do it???

Also...does anyone here have an Lightweight flywheel??? if so, any impressions??????

Thanks!!!

Dealer unless you really trust the indie shop... For mechanical stuff, I personally go to dealer... For minor things such as accessory install, go to somewhere else...

For $1,200!!! I don't believe it. That's too low. If he does what he quoted to you take it. Make sure he saves the old parts so you know he did everything.

Figure 5-6 hours of labor @ $100/hour + clutch kit @ $600 =$1200. Yeah, that doesn't sound too cheap.

Indie (porsche specialist), the more you use them, the better the relationship, and that goes a long way...

The new seal is suppossed to be the answer to the prob...to many anyways

Go to the dealer for sure. You are guaranteed factory warranty anywhere in the U.S. Certainly worth the extra money for a piece of mind in my opinion. Also, something sounds fishy with the independant quote, labor only???

the dirtiest word in porsche It's the reason for the saying

"If your Porsche isn't leaking oil.....check your oil"

Seriously. Its a seal that connects the transmission to the engine. I'm no expert by any means, but apparently the porsche engine design put quite a bit of stress on the shaft that connects the two parts and unless put together "perfect" at the factory...eventually the seal leaks. And shows up as small drops of oil under your car.

Read this for some more info http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...e=post&id=3223

[EDIT] I'm retarded....it stands for "Rear Main Seal"

go to the indy. your car is out of warranty. there is not point going to the dealer anymore. they're overpriced and the work is usually mediocre at best. i've been down this RMS road a couple times now.

$1200 sound about right for a clutch. there really isn't much extra labor to do the seal since it will be right there. the seal itself is only like $60. just bear in mind, it may or may not fix it. porsche has yet to figure out how to permanently repair this. if you bought you car new, you may be able to get porsche to pay the bill or split it.

if you didn't buy it new, go to a porsche indy. get some references. check out their shop. they're every bit as competent for 99 percent of the jobs out there.

I don't know why people keep getting this fixed. It will most likely leak again, and you'll have to pay 2, 3, 4 more times. I've never seen an RMS leak that was so bad it had to be addressed immediately. Just check your oil regularly. The likelihood of the repair causing more problems, due to the engine being pulled, far out ways the few drops of oil.

the problem is that is not necessarily the RMS and could be the intermediate shaft seal leaking from the same area. if you don't address it this could cause catastrophic engine damage from what i have been told. this just happened on my car but was caught before there were any major issues.

Warranty, dealer.
Out of warranty, indy.
1200 is a good price on a clutch job and RMS too. The stealer here quoted me 2500-3000 on mine last summer, indy did it for 1k.(clutch)
Warranty on a clutch job is a minor consideration, they would really have to f something up for a new clutch to give out within a yr.
Ditto what targa said about the rms anyway, all it amounts to is a minor oil leak, nothing to get your panties twisted over.

Mine leaks a pretty significant amount in my opinion, probably the tune of ~5 drops after every drive. Should i be worried??
