that the little surge up/down is gone around 3000 rpm, and everything is smooth from idle to redline.

I wonder if those little surges up/down were from the airflow turburlance in the stock T.

All the smoothness does make it harder for the "butt-o-meter" to feel the power increase, but the smoothness make it a much easier car to drive.

Yep.. it's gone... it's smooth and mine pulls strong with K&N filter and the silicon tube replacement.

I still notice the transition, but the post 3k rpm surge is so much stronger that it feels more flat below that range.

Are you sure that transition isn't the vario cam. I'm talking about the slight surge at 3k as you throttle down/up moderate to lightly not pegged. The 4k surge is when the vario kicks in.

I only have about 12 miles on my new RSS plenum and I have to say I am impressed with the results. I can't wait to drive the car again tomorrow!

I have the K&N KIPK, works perfectly with the plenum and bigger throttle body

I like my K/N intake kit, nice sound and I was very surprised how much it added to the pull and response over the stock airbox. It is also very quiet at idle and you don't know it's there until you put your foot into it, then it just roars.

I'm curious, what is the benefit of retaining the stock air box and adding the red silicon tube vs. going with a full intake kit like K/N?
I'm asking b/c I am new to pcars.

Andy- what is with the larger TB? Can you explain what it entails for the 996? I did that on my '01 Dinan 330i and it made a good difference in response and power.

p0rsch3 - the red silicone kits use the stock airbox, all they do is block off the sound deadening pre-muffler, smooth the airflow. With this kit you can upgrade your flat airbox filter to more porous material. I am a big fan of the K&N cone filters and understand that their cone shape may be more efficient than the flat filters regardless of material due to their increased surface area. In any case, when mated to the RSS plenum all the backpressure gurgling in the exhaust note is gone and all that is left is smooth power.

Thank Nikas-
I was more comparing the addition of the entire K/N Kit (Including heat sheild and intake tube as in my photo) to the plenum / silicon tube combo.
Is one upgrade more efficient than the other?
