FINISHED Kenwood DVD/NAV install and AC control mod- Pics and some DIY stuff
If I recall on the Kenwood you just leave the parking brake wire unhooked. You'll either attach it to ground or leave it unhooked- whatever the opposit is of the directions
Use a light bit of sunglasses spray cleaner on a sunglass cleaning cloth. spray onto the cloth, not the screen.
I did this install in my '02 C4s. It was pretty straight forward with a few small exceptions. I had the factory bose system with nav. The factory GPS antenna is mounted in the same location as the aftermarket is installed in this thread. Getting the factory antenna out was a bit problematic with the tight workspace between the dash and windshield. I ended up just cutting the wire off the factory antenna after 10 - 15 minutes of arguing with the thing and having the magnet continually re-stick itself to the grounding plane under the panel.
After some serious research, and receiving a few quotes for installation ($300 - $500 for the install), I ordered an installation kit on ebay. (not sure if mentioning the seller is some form of advertising so PM me if you want details.) The kit was around $300, but I would highly recommend it. The kit included the Porsche p/n spare change pocket to go under the radio and fill the hole left by the indash nav cd player.
The real reason I chose this kit is it includes a custom milled aluminum bezel, textured and powder coated to match the Porsche plastic trim. It is sized specifically for the 996 & kenwood double din, so it flushes the radio into the dash perfectly.
The aluminum bezel is designed to pressure fit in the dash (no screws or mounting hardware) so I would recommend some double stick 3m tape, or a few drops of clear silicone to enhance the holding power. A few quick accelerations from stop and it ended up in my back seat....
I called the ebay seller and he modified the installation wiring harnesses for me in order to match up with the Bose wiring, which made the whole thing plug and play, no need to cut any factory wires. (keep this in mind if you use a standard non-Bose harness, wires will need to change) The mounting kit that he supplied is very secure, but required that I trim about 1/8th inch of plastic off the lip at the top of the factory mounting bezel in order to center the radio. The plastic that I trimmed is all hidden behind the radio bezel with the factory or aftermarket radio, so neatness was not critical, just a little bit of a pain.
Anyway, I love the kenwood radio (and my 996) and just thought I would add my 2 cents having used this guide first hand to do an install. Thanks again to p0rsch3 for the original post, not sure I would have tackled the project without the op instructions.

Ohh and I am 99.99% sure I ended up grounding the parking break wire, but try it with it just disconnected first and see what you get.
On Kenwoods you don't have to ground the parking brake wire, on Pioneers I think you do have to ground the wire. If your install will not show video when driving then you know you got it backwards... LOL
Hi guys.
I was going to take my car to a shop for this mod, but after much research I've decided to try myself!
I'm working with a 2001 996.
The original layout of my dash console from top to bottom was AC, CD, CD holder, and then the hi-fi equilizer thingy.
Today I removed the cd holder, hi-fi. I moved the AC to the very bottom , and installed a storage tray above it.
It took tons of patient dremel work but the switch looks perfect.
Here is my progress

Nowwwww comes the part where I am totally lost.
I haven't even CHOSEN a new headunit yet. I'm going to go play around with some in the store tomorrow. So far I think I am leaning towards the JVC 7inch video deck .
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...4cf43e77dben02
I have several very dumb questions.
1. Would that headunit come with the double din cage/chassis?
2. Would that headunit come with a surround trim?
3. Would the install of that headunit be as simple as plugging it in to the existing cables?
4. a. Will my stock amp accept that headunit?
b. If not, should I just bypass the amp?
Thank you SOOOO much if anybody can offer any sort of advice!
And thanks for the OP, it was a huge help

You're going to enjoy your double din headunit.. I suggest you checkout [crutchfield.com] There you will see & read the features of many DD headunits. Most all of the units come with the necessary surround molding. Call Crutchfield to find out if a certain unit will work with the oem amp. Crutchfields also sell wiring connect terminals. Good luck
Factory Double Din Console

I did an identical project on my 996 Turbo and the results were fantastic. I have a factory Double Din radio console if you need one. It is new and was not used due to the some other factors. I paid $130 for and will sell it shipped for $80. Let me know if you need this for your project. I can send a pic if youd like. Cheers. Rich 678-648-6461

The new head unit will come with the "cage", but it may not be the correct size. I bought a conversion kit from Loi at euromotorspeed.com on EBay. Loi's kit comes with a very nice surround trim with "Porsche" lettering on it. His conversion kit also has connectors to allow you to plug aftermarket electronics directly into the OEM harness. Any new HU will not plug into the Porsche harness directly. If you have to enter a locking code for your AMP after unplugging the battery, chances are very good that you cannot plug the new HU into the stock AMP. If that happens, it's not a big deal because new DD units have excellent AMPs that usually outperform the stock one anyway.
Mine ( 2001 996tt ) comes with the amp and I have to enter the code to activate radio/nav. does it mean when installing a new HU, I have to replace the stock amp with new one? or running the speaker wires to bypass the stock amp?
Thanks
Yes... You can give it a shot, but I have found that the security seems to be in the AMP as well as the HU, so the new HU will not give you the ability to send the disarm code to the old amp. Depending on the HU, it probably has a better amp than the OEM anyway so bypassing works fine.
