kem is infamous around these parts
I think its ridiculous that a porsche transmission didn't last 30K. It may be out of warranty but I would still bring it up to Porsche NA. I find it unacceptable at that mileage.

that was my feeling, so I am going to keep all receipts and write a letter to Porsche. Who knows I may get something or not. But I feel the same way. I will write a letter and send over the documentation and everything.

You wont get jack **** that way...excuse my french....They will say, " you never gave us the opportunity to fix it."

Its simple...go pick it up...dont use 2nd gear, which isnt that hard at all...drive it to a Porsche dealer, tell them what they said, ASK FOR A LOANER...alot of them will give you one...and then get them to tell you whats wrong, exactly...if its a transmission, then ask for a goodwill....

I would also not tell them you had it checked out at an independent shop. Its easier to look futile like you have no idea whats going on and need their help.

+1, the first thought is this guy is trying to scam us, have a Pcar dealer inspect it, tow it there if you don't want to drive it. Most insurance policies cover towing upon disablement which is your case. If not can't be more than $150. You may get a new tranny with warranty for the towing cost alone.

I have to agree with Newport.... They might say, it was a simple fix but you got "had"..... Now if you took it in to the dealer then they'll have documented proof etc.

Also ever hear of a bad diagnosis? Nothing wrong with a 2nd opinion. The tech you took it to may not have been completely up to speed on 996 transmissions....When confronted with a 7k repair bill, you should get a 2nd opinion...especially when they are saying that its something wrong with the tranny, but we dont know what and we wont know until we crack it open...BUT if we crack it open, there goes your core....And since when did replacing a 996 tranny cost 7k? At an indy?!?! With a REBUILT tranny?! NEVER heard that one...Get to the dealer for a more thorough diagnostic...just one question...you need a clutch and flywheel at 30k???????

I dont need the clutch and flywheel I am just upgrading it since I was able to get a good deal on an EVO Stage II clutch and lightweight flywheel from a fellow 6speeder. That is why I am changing it.

And I did speak to a dealer...I called when I was just looking for the 30K and clutch install and I was getting quoted crazy money.

I really appreciate all your help and input...but again, I do not have the time or the resources for a 2nd or 3rd opinion. If I was to take the car away and drive it to Rusnak or McKenna...what if they tell me the same thing? What if they wont honor goodfaith and say you need a new tranny, what if, what if, what if. So much more involved then I have time for.

Plus I have to back up the shop just a little...its not a rinky dinky little indy shop. This is TRE in north hollywood, I found this shop reccoed on this very site. Usually, people say stay away from the dealer...now I should take it there. What if the shop was GMG or someone just as respected, would it be different?

This is a nightmare...ugh. =(
I am about to jump on a plane in a few hours...take some R&R and when I return I want my car back running perfectly. That's all. sigh....

It has NOTHING to do with the shop...if ANY shop INCLUDING the dealer told me my car needed 7k in repairs...I would get a 2nd opinion, unless he could SHOW me the failed parts....The real issue here is that the dealer is the only one that can get you replacement for free...Also the dealer has the most experience with 996s..MUCH more than any indie....so they would know best how to diagnose issues even WITHOUT cracking open the tranny....Porsche tells them lots of ways to track down a problem, and they can and will call for help from PCNA to diagnose issues they have not seen. They can goodwill a repair if its due to a defective part....etc...but if you just want your car back...pay the 7K and you got it...if it were me...I wouldnt drop a penny until I knew EXACTLY what failed...it may take me a little time but free and wait a week (with a loaner) or 7k now....I'll wait a few days....

okay. here is the website you need to look at. this will be the last time i will mention this, as you seem to be dead set on spending $7K.

anyway, it's powerhaus II.

http://www.powerhaus.homestead.com/page04.html

their ad in panorma says, "Save thousands. Repair your 996, Carerra 2/4, 993, Boxster S, or GT3 shifting problems with a synchro repair kit. Call today for a free consultation!"

I have no experience with these guys whatsoever, but they have been advertising in Panorama for a long time. I certainly think it warrants a phone call to them, but it's totally up to you.

good luck and let us know how it works out.

They are great people to work with, in the winter I ordered a few things from them and they were a ton of help.

Nice to see so many people willing to help him save some $$ on the repair, but at times people prefer to spend extra money and not have to deal with many nuances. TRE is an extremely well respected shop. I am under the impression that their forte is with the earlier cars, as they "hang out" a lot with the Pelican Parts people and the Gruppe B crowd. He could have done a lot worse by choosing another shop.
