Guys:

I'm kind of new to this forum and still enjoying my new (for me) 996 Cab, but this is a painful thread. Everyone is offering solid advice after the original post but I just don't think he's looking for advice.

It seems the posting should have read more like "I seem to have lost 2nd gear and this guy at the shop says I can have it back for $7,000. Just wanted you to know".

I'm going to live for quite a few more years. If it were me, I'd take the time and go the extra step and get a second opinion. I've had several 2nd opinions save me wasted money on various repairs in the past.

But this is a great country. You can spend your money anyway you want. More power to him. But when I read he has "a plan" to get the money, I'm thinking he doesn't have $7,000 sitting around looking to be wasted.......

Oh well. Best of luck.

J.D.

This thread is pointless. Without posting the technical details of the failure, it just creates an ambiguous negative thread. Oh well. It just goes to show you have high maintenance girlfriends, and then you have porsche. Dean

UPDATE - and a review of my own car

OK...I got my car back last Thursday. I wont get into the gory details and I wont debate anyone on here on whether or not I made the "right" decision, or I got ripped off, or I am an idiot. I dont need to defend my decision and basically, I made my decision with the available info I had at the time, and even now I am satisfied with it. So...lets not get into a heated debate or flame war on my decision ok?

here is what I had done to the car:

replace and install - My gear box with a 6 speed Porsche factory rebuilt gear box. Comes with factory warranty for 12 months.

30K maintenance - Full tune up including plugs and misc things my car needed

replace and install - My stock clutch and flywheel with a EVO Stage II Clutch and light weight alum flywheel.

I have to say..the car feels BRAND NEW. It may be in my head...but the best word I can use is the car FEELS CRISPY! yeah...I know...CRISPY? yes...the car is very tight and responsive. The clutch which I thought was going to be tough is BUTTER SMOOTH! It engages nice and I would still NOT drive it in traffic as you have to slip it in 1st because it has a nice bite! But the pressure on your foot and the shifts are SMOOOOOOOOOOOOTH. of course with a new tranny in there...that is part of it too. The flywheel...WOW. The car is soooo much more responsive. The revs are all there and taking it to 6.5K RPMS is a breeze. For a CAB...this is a nice feeling. The car revs effortlessly and you have to shift before hitting redline. The suspension was also tightened. The techs at TRE drove my car and adjusted the suspension as it was a tad sloppy...and now the steering wheel and the car it self just feels better. Again..it may be in my head, but it is even more fun to drive this thing.
The only "bad" thing with the lt wt flywheel is the sound you get with the clutch out. Sitting there...you can hear it whirring..and it sounds like something is wrong...like the pilot bearing or whatever...its just the flywheel spinning around. So I have to get used to that...other than that its great.

In the end...I am very pleased with the FINAL result. The car feels and sounds and run GREAT. I also recently was able to pick up a nice beater, daily driver to have handy. So my cab is sitting under her car cover in the parking garage resting nicely, all clean and shiny...while I drive my other car in LA traffic. I get to keep the miles low...and really enjoy the car with all the new mods and tune up on the weekends and "special" occasions. Also having a beater is nice on first dates! Now I can pick up girls for dinner and stuff in my beater (1987 Honda Prelude, yes it is TWENTY years old!) and take her out and see if she cares about the car...before she sees the Porsche!

thats it...I still appreciate all the help you guys provided with advice and suggestions. So thank you for that. Have a great rest of the weekend.

The Prelude needs some PSS9's, MK II body kit, Misha Wing, etc.

But the big question is, What oil are you going to run in it?

Glad to hear things worked out.

Did they find what actually failed in your tranny? I'm having a somewhat similar problem on my 99 - I'm having trouble going into third, and when the car goes back into neutral, the stick doesn't center, but instead goes all the way to the right. (If I push straight up, I go right into 5th)

I thought maybe a centering spring or something broke, and maybe my 3rd gear issue is just because I'm not lining up exactly when going for it. It's a stock shifter, so I thought about "upgrading" to a B&M and seeing if the problem went away. But now your post makes me wonder if it's something bigger than just the shifter.

On the shifter end the Porsche does not use centering springs, etc. The problem you are describing would not be solved by going to a B&M short shifter. Just brainstorming here, but it could be your linkage cables, where they attach at the transmission, or worst case, inside the transmission.

That's not good news. Would you proactively have it looked at, or wait for it to fail? Right now it's just a minor nuisance, and I've probably been driving with it like this for 4+ months now. (I'm lazy)
