Police scanner

Does anybody know of a police scanner that will fit in a standard 996 slot??? If you have any other suggestions, I'll be glad to know.

I'm sure most of you are thinking WTF, but some have an answer. Thanks.

Does anybody here have any experience with the Uniden BCT-12 Beartracker?? I've been doing some research and it seems like a good way to go. Thanks.

msindi, thanks for the info.

Ok, so after some research, I have things narrowed down to three likely options:

1) BCT-12
2) BCT-7
3) BCT-8

And it's basically a question of a windshield mounted BCT-12 or a consol mounted BCT 7 or 8. So in order to make this decision, I'm trying to find out:

1) Is there a significant difference between the BCT-7 or BCT-8?

2) Is there a significant advantage in coverage in the the 7/8 over the 12?

There are obviously pros and cons. The BCT-12 has less channels, but it means that it will cycle through them faster. But I also think the 7/8 has more of a frequency range, so the question is whether or not they cover any bands that I could ever find of use not covered by the BCT-12????

I know very technical question, but the BCT-12 is discontinued, so I'm really digging for information.

I couldn't find this anywhere, but for the BCT-7/8, what speaker is it connected to or does it come with one built in? I'm seriously considering the BCT-8 and found what looked like a couple of good deals on Ebay. Anyone have experience with this particular scanner?

Thanks,

Ed

^DJI, I have the same question regarding the audio output...??

What do you think about the BCT-12. The main advantage I see for it is the fact it gives you warning signal strength on a scale of 1-9, so you can actually know if you're getting away or closer to the signal source.

I like that feature along with the winshield mount on the BCT 12, but the fact that it's discontinued scares me a little. If I were going to be on the road relying on this thing, I would want the most updated one...

NYSEguy, I wouldn't worry about the fact it's discontinued. I would bet it was discontinuid for liability issues because it was TOO effective. It was clearly designed with the exclusive purpose of avoind speeding tickets, whereas the other scanners can somewhat be justified as "radio entertainment." That's just my opinion though.

I like the BCT8, but it's too large to fit in the empty slot of a 996. If I want to put it there, I'll have to put it in instead of the CD holder slots. Which is not a bad idea either.

I just went ahead and bid on the BCT8. Called up Uniden and they said that the big difference between the 12 and they 8 was that the 12 isn't trunking and the 8 is. There's a chick in Baltimore selling them on ebay for 174 plus shipping. No affiliation, just giving a heads up.

KPV, how did you hook it in so you can hear it? External speaker? If I take it to a stereo shop to install in the CD holder space, they should be able to hook up a good antenna and speaker to it?

Thanks,
Ed

Powerbroker, I came to the same conclusion and set up as you're thinking.

I see you got her last model at $175. With shipping you're paying $190. I'm going to order mine from scannermaster.com for $200 with shipping. This way if I have trouble fitting it in the CD holder slot I can return it for sure and get the BCT-7 off eBay instead.

As far as the audio bit, I was told it has a built in speaker at the bottom of the unit. It better be pretty loud else it's just going to be muffled by what it's sitting on. I plan on trying to connect it to the existing car antenna, so you may want to buy the antenna splitter too. As a nice bonus, I'll also try to connect it to the AUX option on my Becker, so I could switch its output to the car stereo if I really want to. I'm going to have to figure that one out when I have the unit in hand though.

Note though that the BCT-8 is 2.44 inches in height according to its manual. I measured the CD holder in the consol to be about 2.4 inches. It means we'll have to squeeze in .04 inches somewhere.

Let's hope it works!

I'm waiting to get my aluminum/Lipstick Red shifter and e-brake package as well. I think the red highlights on the BCT-8 will go quite well with it.

If you read the shipping instructions, it was vague about shipping, so I got her to discount the shipping for me to free. $174.99 shipped is what it came to, and if it doesn't fit my needs, I'll just relist it myself. Where did you see the antenna splitter at? I don't think I can hook it up to my radio though since it's got that damn fiber optics that makes it impossible to upgrade Good luck with yours
