Unhappy First Oil Change and RMS Leak Found!

Just picked up a 2002 911 w/20K miles, (still under warranty) and during my first oil change today they found a leaky rear main seal !!

The guys at the shop (private porsche shop Dublin Ca ) said sometimes Porsche will not cover a RMS leak if they do not classify it as a true "dripping" leak.

Is this true . . does anyone have any advice for me when I take the car to Porsche ? Which is better for this kind of thing Porsche Fremont or Walnut Creek?

Thanks,
Chuck

I've never heard of it being denied under warranty. There are quite a few people on this board who even had it fixed out of warranty.

Even if you have to wait for the drip, there is no risk of a catastrophic failure. Warranty should eventually take care of it. Mine was changed twice under warranty in the first 26,000 miles.

I took my car to Michael Stead Porsche in W.C. for an alignment. Afterwards I spoke to Alex at Shark Werks about what the tech told me about my alignment, and Alex told me that they (Porsche dealer) obviously do not know how to align cars that have modified/lowered suspension. So with that said, I am now taking my car to Carlsen Porsche as I have heard nothing but good things about them.

But it is up to you where you take it too, and since M.S. Porsche is closer to you than Carlsen, then that makes sense. But I am going to drive the extra distance to a recommended dealer even though they cost a little more to do the work, what's that saying 'you get what you pay for'.

So +1 for Carlsen

Not sure about Fremont, knowone has mentioned them.

Walnut Creek, well you got my feedback already.

You may want to buy a new clutch kit 300-400 bucks and have them install it when they do the Free RMS...that way you have a fresh clutch at 20k miles that you can wear out. It should cost you nothing to install as they remove all of the old clutch components to do a RMS job.....

Very good advice . . however I am one of those SF Bay Area high traffic level tiptronic owners.

With that in mind is there any other "replacement" considerations I should have Porsche do since they are going to have the tranny out ?

Thanks,

Does this RMS problem affect all 996 C2's? And is the fix a permanent fix or will the problem arise again due to an inherit flaw in design?

Same thing happened to me..02 C4 Cab with 22500 miles..oil change and leaking RMS..fortunately my extended warranty took care of it for $100 deductible. According to the Porsche service techs, it is common in majority of the 911 lineup including the 997.

Thumbs up

Great News ! Walnut Creek Porsche, specifically Eric Shaefer ( service Mgr.) really took excellent care of me. They replaced my RMS, changed the casing bolts, and the intermediate shaft bolts, replaced one of the drive coupling, replaced oil, coolant, and even serviced my AC. And all under my existing warranty.

I am very happy with the service Stead Porsche of Walnut Creek Ca provided.

Chuck
