C4S weird morning starts ?

Two months ago, I bought a 2005 996 C4S. This is my first Porsche and I wonder if they have a peculiar way to start (especially in the morning).

First, when turning the key, it doesn't start immediately. You really have to keep the key turn for about 2-3 seconds.

Second, once it starts, it seems like it wants to turn itself off again. For about 4 seconds, it shakes, coughs, and farts ( during those two seconds, if I tap the throttle, it goes off ). After, it shakes and coughs, trying to clear its throat, then it accelerates to 1200 rpm's. and then it starts the warming up process. After it warms up, the engine is sweet.

Is this normal in a Porsche car ?? Or I need to take it to the doctor ??

Hah...I just cleaned my throttle body and it resolved my poor idling at first-start symptom.
Funny thing is, the carbon buildup wasn't that bad, yet the cleaning made such a difference!

Sounds like two different problems to me. The key issue may be a fault in the ignition or security system not turning completely off, i.e. bad key, bad battery in key, ignition switch, etc... The engine firing may be a result of ignition cutout from the security system. My $.02.

Easy! Take the air filter housing off and push the the T/B butterfly open with one hand and clean the mating surface with a cloth rag with a little gas or paint thinner. Clean the mating surface where the butterfly rest on and behind the B/F/Valve until clean. While you're at it, change your air filter too.

That would be the simplest DIY you've ever done.

Here's a "Idiot's Guide to Throttle Body Cleaning" with pictures.

also let it go through the diagnostics when you turn the key - wait and then start the engine.

Thank you CosmosC4S.

I went to the link you provided and the description of the problem is exactly what I'm experiencing at start-up. That person describes the problem even better than me....

I will try the clean-up of the throttle body and I will post the results.
