The 997TT's One Year Report Card.
The 997TT's One Year Report Card.
1 year has come and gone.
Overall, I love my 997TT.
No other car delivers the power, handling, finish, quality, and RELIABILITY of the 997TT. The car is bullet-proof. With this in mind, there are some details that need some attention. Here are the grades I give the car after one year.
Acceleration- A-. The car is a rocket. When the turbos are blazing and the RPM's are 3000-6000, the car feels like a crotch rocket. If it were not for the turbo lag, the grade would be an A+. "VTG dramatically reduces turbo lag" is a bold, black lie and "exhaust, headers, and chip" eliminates turbo lag is a bold, dark gray lie. Don't let anyone fool you...there is turbo lag with or without all the goodies. However, when the turbos are spooled up, nothing beats it.
Handling- A+. The car is on rails. This car allows fair drivers (like myself) to drive like Cole Trickle. The turbo has become my preferred car for wet, rainy days or icy, cold days.
Braking- A-. The minus comes from my squeaking brakes. I would gladly pay 20K now for yellow brakes that don't squeak. Some might say this a minor detail....I hate the sound of 20 year old city buses. As for performance, the brakes are phenominal. The only thing that rushes the adrenaline more than accelerating from 0-120 in 10 seconds is decelerating from 120-0 in 5 seconds.
Reliability- A+. This car majors in reliability. The car writes the book on the subject. It is a professor on the subject. This engine puts out nearly 600HP and all it needs this year is an oil change. My sons Huffy bicycle has cost more in maintenance this year than the Turbo.
Finish- B. The leather interior with stitching is nice. There are many luxurious finishes in the 997TT, but other neglected aspects need some attention.
1. WE WANT BLUETOOTH
2. No IPOD
3. No Satellite Radio
4. The flickering of the door sills is reminds me of an old neon hotel
sign.
Hans and Frans in Stuttgart need to take a field trip to Japan for the weekend.
Overall, I love this car and would definitely buy another.

They said small squeaks are normal but not the ones 2K7997TT is talking about.
Mine came from the rear and sounded awful. They took care of it and now I have to burnish them wtih some hard stops from about 80 mph and trigger the ABS a few times. They told me to give it about 200 miles to get them seated right. The squeaks I had were at low mph stops not hard stops or stops from 30 mph and up. The squeaks are very minimal now if at all lately.
But I have to agree with you on your write up. The car is wonderful so far and outside of the No Bluetooth, No IPOD connection, and a HORRIBLE NAV system the car is wonderful

Take a look at the BMW 2003 with the software updates to get an idea of what it should look like. The Lexus and Infiniti makes a hell of a system but they don't use smoothing like the NAV 26.1 update for the DVD MKIV system in the BMW's. Plus you can search by name and zip code.
Come on Porsche that is a 2003 Technology with 2007 updates.
Why doesn't Porsche come out with updates like the BMW's updates?
It would be nice to search from location. I can't even get it to find HOME DEPOT down the street from me!!! I am better off with a TOM TOM
I've had mine for just over a year too. I absolutely LOVE the way it turned out especially with the "mods" I've done to it.
I agree with you about the lack of Bluetooth and iPod but however those two I guess are available through aftermarket means which ironically works as well as they should have come from the factory. Porsche should really talk to these aftermarket guys about somehow implementing these options into their cars for the future.

I have only had my 997TT for about a month but I think you are right on the money with many of your points - especially about the turbo lag. I love this car. I wanted to buy one ever since it scored third best in the Robb Report's Car of the Year issue. And I am 99% thrilled with it. But there are a few very minor ****** in the armor. Turbo lag is probably the biggest. This car simply does not have that neck breaking throttle respose that high performance naturally aspirated rear wheel drive cars have. But once the turbos are engaged, there is nothing like it. Also, the exhaust note is simply very muted. My Brabus SLK B55 makes the 997TT sound like a wimper. There are also the many nit-picks about the interior options. Mercedes also overlooks some very simple things that brands like Lexus and Infiniti have down pat.
But all of these "gripes" seem ridiculous and melt away one I get in the car and drive. I have never had such fun driving a car and have never looked forward to driving a car each day like I do the 997TT. I am sure that there is a Ferrari and/or Lambo in my near future. I just love the exotics. But as a ultra reliable daily driver, I really enjoy my 997TT.

Move your limits to 4000-6500 and the lag is gone. With turbos, you have to generate the exhaust for 100% acceleration...punch should get an A+ now.
"VTG dramatically reduces turbo lag" is a bold, black lie and "exhaust, headers, and chip" eliminates turbo lag is a bold, dark gray lie. Don't let anyone fool you...there is turbo lag with or without all the goodies. I wondered if any of these extras would help the turbo lag in the 3-4K range, but I see now it is wasted money and motion.
Braking- A-. The minus comes from my squeaking brakes. I would gladly pay 20K now for yellow brakes that don't squeak. Some might say this a minor detail....I hate the sound of 20 year old city buses. The dealership warned me paying $8.8K for ceramics would possibly lead to squeaky brakes...I stayed with steel.
Great summary, well written.

I agree with you on the technology aspect. Why can't the offer sat radio and bluetooth? I have my TT now 7 months with a cab just about to be delivered. The car is great. You are right. The power is amazing, and after driving a 997 C4S, that car doesn't compare to the TT. I have now had both brakes. The PCCB's are preferable. They don't squeak or show that rust color after washing, and they look a lot better overall. So far for me, the one thing that I think they need to improve on is the sound of the car. For a 480HP Turbo machine, the car should have a throatier sound. My friends Ferrari sounds great. You know that car is coming down the street. Not too loud, but it needs to sound different than my Infiniti FX.
