Good news, bad news...

First the bad... came out to my 997TT parked at garage at work and passenger side rear tire was flat (didn't notice until i turned car on and TPM warning popped up)...

Here's the good news... I was a bit skeptical, but the tire sealant goop actually works. I followed the instructions, filled the tire w/ the glue, used the mini-compressor to reinflate to around 42 psi, and drove off... fully expected to lose pressure as I drove home (too late to take to dealer), but it held up and only took about 20 min to do (most of which was me double checking to make sure wasn't screwing it up). The car sat overnight in garage and still held the 42 psi.

Ouch... had enough wear on rears that I had to replace both sides to avoid a mis-match in tread (maybe I was taken, but tread did look worn). 2 new Michelin PS2's 305/30/19 ran around $550 each, plus mounting/balancing, labor, etc... doh! The bad tire had a small gash on the tread side, not sure how it happened. I kept the undamaged tire as a back-up in the event this happens again w/ some mileage into the new ones.

Oh well... Good to know the tire sealant kit actually works.

About a week after getting my RS, I ran over a nail and got a slow leak.
Brought it back to dealership, they used the goo stuff, worked great. They actually said I could track the car with that patch.

Needless to say I got a new tire!

Stuff works though.

Do you have to buy a new can of sealant or do you can a few repairs?

How much is it?

What was mileage when you got the flat??? From tirerack, currently, $1057 with shipping for two PS2 rears. I thought it best to get a couple because there have been times when PS2s have not been available. Looks like my fast/furious driving deletes two rears in about 20000 miles and two fronts no doubt in about 40000. With my previous M3, rear tires went south at 15000. fronts at 40000. Could be porsche front wheel drive saves some wear/tear on rears.

The sealant can is 1x use only (once its punctured it cannot be resealed). So have to buy a new sealant kit... which my locally dealer happily sold to me for $43... They were nice enough to place it in the proper front cubby hole for me.

My rears had around 5500 miles on them, w/ a LOT of aggressive weekend miles as well as 2 full track days. 997's have a rear weight bias, so the rears are known to wear 2x as fast as the fronts. Service tech's on seperate occassions have told me expect to get 2x the life out of fronts vs rears. On my prior 996 C4S, I got about 9K miles out of the rears before they were in obvious need of replacement... I drive agressively, and did track that car a few times as well.

I just sucked it up at the dealer's price (was not THAT much more $) b/c I couldn't afford to wait for shipping, and would still have to have them mounted, balanced, etc (this is my daily driver).

bummer... I don't know what it is about pick ups/trucks in California but every effing day I see the same crap. AKA stuff flying off of trucks and not packaged or tied-down properly.

I had a nearly identical experience with a nail in the road. The goo kit really worked well.

Suncoast has replacements for a reasonable $27.

I don't know what's worse - the road debris on Bay Area freeways, or the potholes (sinkholes!) of San Francisco city streets! Not to mention the 2" recessed manhole covers downtown...

Totally agree with you BSM! SF roads are way overdue for repavement. VanNess a joke. I dare not hit the button for a stiffer suspension unless I have some Asprin in my glove box. It wasn't always this bad in the past?

you guys haven't seen roads in the Philippines!

I just busted a tire on the Turbo last Sunday too... 2x4 plank of plywood in the middle of the highway that I didn't see til was too late

oh, and if you have problems with recessed manhole covers... we have problems with OPEN manholes in the middle of the road! (what happens is that people STEAL the manholes to sell for scrap... the unfortunate realities of a 3rd world country)

Oops, sorry for the OT. Good to know that the goop works! They sell those "spare tire in a can" products, but i've never actually tried them. I'm assuming they work equally well, or at least good enough to get you home. I've got a can in every one of my cars, just in case!

After seven of these cars I have come to accept tires as a way of life. The first time I paid 1K or so for two rears on a flat I felt that I had lost my innocence . I say this because in the many Porsche advertisements showing a child dreaming of a Porsche I can relate yet taht dream is never comprised of the reality of a a 1K flat tire .

The education is expensive but the car is well worth it to me.

When I purchased my '07, the dealer had some tire insurance for $600 which covered all tires for 100K miles against flats or any other road hazards. Pays all expenses to get a new one. Just doesn't pay for the tire worn out from normal wear. With these kinds of prices for a flat replacement, I guess it is well worth the $0.6K. At least I thought so at the time.

I have had three flats; two rears and one front. I also had purchased the tire insurance and obviously has paid for itself. I have one claim left as there is a limit. The rear tires are like magnets for nails which have been the cause of both rear flats.
The sealant has certainly help prevent being stranded.
