My guess is --no one will even know what the GTR is 40 years from now but all will remember the significance of the Porsche 911.
Actually the skyline GTR has been around for nearly 40 years now...I doubt it is going to go anywhere anytime soon.

SORRY BUT the skyline model of cars have been around since the 50's it was frist under the Prince badge then was switched to Nissan when Prince motor was bought by Nissan.. the GTR brand started in the late 60's, and was banned from racing due to nearly dominating the competition by winning all of the races it entered.

1950's skyline

(1969-1972) "HAKASOKA" first GTR

(1972-1977)

Mid 80's skyline...
the not so pupular R31 skyline

(1989–1994)R32 skyline GTR - the madness starts again...

(1995–1999) R33 gtr

(1999–2002)r34 gtr

Yes, but the GTR's pedigree is nowhere near as prestigious as the 911's.

911 derivatives have been in MAJOR worldwide racing series since it's inception, not just japanese ones. Look at the racing 935's and GT1's, which were both directly based on 911's. Does the GTR have a derivative like that? Nope.

since this thread won't go away I'll add. the car is impressive, no doubt great piece of engineering but at 4100 lbs (with driver) i don't believe it would hold up to the rigors of frequent track usage.

discovery laps yes, performance benchmarks yes, consistent track days -- to heavy I am afraid

i've seen it happed several times in the past, with many cars, BMW M5, Audi RS4, Mustang GT500; at 4000+lbs, you have just too much weight and inertia working against you on a track; i also suspect the C63 AMG 4000+ will have the same fate -- all great cars, though

the latest article seemed to get it right, this is a highly capable, high performance GT, as opposed to a sports car

i like what Nissan has done, and I appreciate Japanese approach to high performance (high tech) i just think in practical terms the car will be too heavy

My big gripe on this who subject right now is that the 997tt SET THE BAR, and then several years LATER the GTR was able to shave a small margin off of the 997tt.

It would be a whole different game right now if the GTR was the first to set the bar and we all saw Porsche trying to play catch up. That is not the way that it is though. Porsche has already moved the game on.

Oh and by the way. I am working my way up to a P-car, but my car of choice that I will own in the near future is not the GTR it is the 996tt. The best test for a lot of these cars is the cars perfect counter part- girls. When a girl sees a GTR they think videogames and boy racer. When a girl sees a Porsche owner they see a guy with taste and style. Case Closed...

SCvet00,

The GTR is butt ugly. Who cares that it is as fast or faster than a 997TT. If you weren't spending so much time on this listserve maybe you would have time to make more $$$ to enable you to purchase an attractive sports car such as the 997TT. Maybe you could have a GTR, 997TT and a ZR1 if you work hard enough. But, alas, I believe that you are merely an internet troll who belongs in a repulsively ugly auto like the GTR.
