Check Engine Oil Level?

My car just passed 2,300 miles, and every time I start it says "Check Engine Oil Level": is this normal?

So what happens when you check the oil level?

It could be down a quart in 2300 miles. Why not check the oil? The computer will do it for you.

I did an oil change at 3,000 miles just to get rid of the break-in oil. On the ///M cars they do it at 1200-1500 miles so I figured why not. Before that, I did need to fill up a quart at around 2000 miles.

So at least two people posting in this thread waited for the "Check Engine Oil" light to come on before adding a quart - do you think this is a result of not having a dipstick or would these folks have waited for a light anyway?

thanks for the help, guys. i just added a quart of mobil 1 and it's back to normal level.

however, the guy at pepboys told me that usually cars don't need to add engine oil at 2300 miles. something is wrong. i told him and i did not see any oil stain in my garage, he said i could be leaking oil while driving the car. then again, he said he didn't know anything about a porsche tt.

i had bought quite a few new cars myself, although this is my first porsche, i never had to add oil so soon. that's why i was wondering if there's anything wrong or do i need to send it to the dealership for a check up.

thanks again for the help!

There is nothing wrong with your car. The same exact thing happened to me and I posted a question just like yours. I found that this is common. I was also thoroughly scolded for waiting until the warning came on.

Smile $ Oil

I called a dealer in the L.A. area and was informed 579.00 should do it for my first service, Local dealer here in the desert charged me 249.00 for the same
service...

Next time I see my dealer in L.A. I will be ready with a condom and some lube....

I have a exclusive part on order now for six months....

Agreed. Mine took 1 quart at 1000 miles and another 1.5 quarts at 2500 miles. Perfectly normal -- it just means that you are breaking it in correctly!

According to Porsche, burning up to one quart every 800 miles is normal and acceptable.

And the two dealers I have talked to, say 9.5 quarts is amount to add for an oil change. This fills to and includes the top level bar. The manual says 8.5 and leave the top level bar blank. These two dealers say the driver's manual is wrong on this spec. This oil-filling to include the top line makes a big difference when oil-mileage is low on these tts during their oil burning 0-5000 miles. Not so many frequent times to have to add oil. Dealers also say tt-engines run hot and that extra quart is needed for better engine efficiciency. Never have checked with Porsche on this, just use 9.5 quarts.
