racking my brain - tip or 6 speed
i'm not a soccer mom, but i am a jerkoff !
ok - i'm getting the idea.... i want to enjoy this car as much as possible, so 6 speed it is
i don't plan on drinking coffee, having my wife drive me while i'm drunk, or talk on the cell phone
i have to admit, when i drove the porsche at the track (with the tip) the thumb shifters (vs. the ferrari / lambo paddles) didnt stack up, but the porsche was a beast
there was a carrera gt there pacing the lambo b/c the other lambo's transmission fried - gt is sick fast - tried keeping up in the lambo superleggara (and granted i was trying to follow a professional race car driver) but got flat out smoked

Tip or stick
Ok - Ill give my 2 cents
I have had the following - all daily drivers (15K/yr)
2003 996 TT tip (coupe) - black
2005 996 TT 6-speed (Cab) - Gray/black (ext/top)
2008 997 TT 6-Speed (Cab) - White/black (ext/top)
I live at the beach and the cab is a MUST HAVE option. Ill never have another coupe. The cab is too much fun.
As for the transmission. Go with the 6-speed unless you drive in a lot of freeway traffic - then consider the TIP.
Overall, I will not get another tip even though the wife liked it better.
Bottom line-
Get a 997 TT cab with the 6-speed.
You wont regret it.

The best answer to this is with a few questions to you.
What kind of transmissions do you have on your current cars esp. daily driver? Do you enjoy the transmission style on your current DD or would you change to the opposite?
Which is more important to you in a car: utility ( IE having a convertible that may not be as fast or quite as stable) or outright speed and progress?
In the end you are the one who will be driving it so you must be the one who will be happy with the decision. As for the convertible, I do remember EVO reviewed the convertible a while back and had very favorable things to say about it. ( Much better than they have ever said about a true convertible.) Here is the link:
http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evoc...rsche_911.html
There is also a guy at the gym that I go to who tracks his 997 911 conv. and he said that he loves it and would not change a thing.
Did you go to the Supercar Experience day, or what track day did you attend?

The intelligent responders with experience on the track will not call the tip the wrong choice. If you daily drive her (ie. 12K-15K miles per year) and will occasionally track her (like me) the tip is ideal. If you have minimal traffic issues or are just a Sunday driver then the 6 speed will work for you.
BTW I'm no soccer mom (my 3 daughters don't play soccer) but believe that if you daily drive your TT in bumber to bumper traffic with a 6 speed that YOU will be a jerkoff - trust me I did for 3 years and went through 2 trannies (synchros) and twisted the gear shift linkage (on an 03 X50 6speed).
BTW you may want to read my writeup on what a TT tip can do at a track (see 7/4 Pocono DRE). It was my first foray into tracking, outside of Skip Barber at Lime Rock, and my tip just decimated the green group, including 2 996 GT3s and a 997 GT3. So call me a jerkoff at Watkins Glen 8/23-8/24 (hopefully I'll make it there) with your badass 6 speed !!!!! I'll be in the green sissy (beginners) group with the other jerkoffs.

I think the 6speed is the way to go because its so well designed in terms of the pedals, gear shifter, that it just makes it so easy to really improve your shifting (toe & heel, double clutching, etc.). As long as you practice your shifting on the street and start developing good habits you wont destroy your syncros or your clutch.
The tip is faster 0-60 only from a stand still because it builds boost pressure before launch, but that never comes into play on the track, and I personally dont see a point in racing people on the street from red lights.
If it was a PDK I think it would be a more difficult choice, because then there wouldnt be such a big difference between the two and it would really come down to if you enjoy shifting gears and playing with the clutch.
Otherwise, if you feel comfortable with the stick go for it. I drive mine daily in NYC traffic and it really isnt that much of a bother. Especially after you get used to the clutch.

i will never drive this in bumper to bumper traffic, just easy street and easy freeway driving to work....having said that, i'm setting up some track time with a few friends at laguna seca, so hopefully i'll do that 3-4 times a year...i think i need the stick and i'll go to some driving school to learn how to drive it properly - i don't want my 1st track experience to be at laguna seca and be overly aggressive and wreck b/c i'm a rookie
the track experience was called "supercar life" and it was amazing and a little disappointing at the same time -
the highs: a once in a lifetime experience to track (i'm talking 140-150 mph in the fastest straight) all those cars...
got a few hot laps in the carrera gt - ridiculous fast
lambo superleggara - screaming fast, barks on the downshifts, you smile when you drive it
ferrari f430 - makes you feel like you could quit your job and be a professional race car driver -
amg black series - gentle on the gas in turns or the tc cuts the motor, smoking fast in the straights,
AM DB9 - sloppy compared to the rest of this group, i actually was thinking of getting this car b/c its so beautiful, but now there's no way, gotta go with the porsche
i spun this car out ( i don't know how, the tc must have been off or something ) on the last lap of the day and went 60 mph backwards into the dirt - they gave me a lecture
and of course Porsche TT - once i got used to the turbo lag, and kept the revs up, etc, its a go kart with a rocket in the back
the lows: there is an identical race car in front pacing you, and if you are an aggressive driver, there to push the car and push yourself, then you might find yourself running up the *** of the pace driver in front - unless you tell them ahead of time, which i did EVERY SINGLE TIME, don't go slow, and then they still might go too slow
Over-all a phenomenal experience, especially if you are in the market for one of those cars, you get the test drive of a life - i went to my local bmw dealer to test drive m3/m6 and they wouldn't let me - with this, you get to drive em like you stole em

I can maybe see a Tip in a 911 cab but never for me.
In a TT just cant see anyone getting a tip.
I would never consider it, just goes against my grain to say automatic and Porsche Twin turbo in the same sentence. I d be too embarassed owning one.
If my wife wanted a Cab of course it would be her car and if she insisted on auto, so be it.
