racking my brain - tip or 6 speed
I picked a 6speed . I love to row the gears and feel as though i am actively interracting with my car . I am driving it rather than it doing the driving for me.
As for the Tip - personal choice --but I do wonder if they will retain value after PDK makes way .

tip. without question. faster - better in traffic (for those of us that use it as a dd.). I also have a stick cayman. thats fun too. but in small doses. and believe me - I have only driven sticks all my life - and my last car (m5) had a smg - and that sold me on the auto type tranny.
but what really sold me on it - its faster. without question. and I have a hard time on buying something slower. but then, I am sure, that someone will say "depends on the driver" :-). but that okay :-)

I can see the draw to a Tip for those who want the look of a Porsche without the need to learn how to drive it. But that just gives you the look of a Porsche, not the heart of a Porsche.
Also, I think the claim that the Tip "is faster - without question" is pretty bold and somewhat dubious. What do you base that claim on? Now I know that someone will say "but it gets 0-60 in 3.2 secs instead of 3.6 secs." But let's see any of you Tip owners match those numbers. In the right hands, I promise the 6 speed is faster - especially after some simple mods that are impossible on the Tip. Every review I read about the Tip said that it seeks high gears and low revs to quickly and that it is hard to stay in that brutal power zone. For example, Car and Driver said:
Does this mean we'd choose an automatic over a manual in the Turbo? Unless you're planning to spend lots of time at a drag strip, where the all-wheel-drive system might not survive frequent four-wheel burnouts, the answer is no. While at the track the five-speed Tiptronic shifts smoothly and quickly, around town it can become bothersome. First off, Porsche automatics prefer to start in second gear, which seems strange coming from such a performance-oriented company. That means if you dig deep enough into the throttle from a standstill, you get a clunky 2-1 downshift. And the upshifts are often less than crisp, more of a slurring between gears. Also, we'd prefer proper shift paddles—left for downshifts, right for upshifts—mounted behind the steering wheel, instead of the Turbo's toggle switches on the front of the wheel that control shifts in both directions. And, not surprisingly, the response time is noticeably slower than automated manuals like Audi's rapid-shifting dual-clutch DSG. Not helping the Tiptronic's case is the $3420 option price, but maybe at the Turbo's starting price of $123,695, a few grand isn't important.
For the real Porsche experience, my opinion is that you must get the 6 speed. Trying to drive an automatic Porsche is like trying to swim without getting wet.

However, 0-60, 0-100 times are hardly the ultimate measure of how fast a car is...
My next turbo will be with PDK or whichever gearbox will be faster

Who said that u cant not drive 997 TT tips ??? I wish 6 speed manual was faster then I would get it...but its not, so my choice was TipS and I doubt that any off 997 TT driver will be faster onn track or at the city with 6 speed manual then a driver with Tips...everything depends on U...

I disagree.
OK...we all have our own opinions...but WHY ???
Even Porsche test driver I dont remeber his name...said that with TipS u can do everything what u can on 6 speed on the track...

Use my Turbo Cab as a Daily Driver - Definitely enjoy my short shifter 6-speed. Tip is outgoing tech, I wouldnt go that route. Even if given a choice between PDK & 6-speed, I'd still pick the 6-speed. It's just more fun. Plus you can't get the LSD w/ the tip. And in terms of FUN, Go w/ the Turbo Cabriolet, the swiss army knife of the sports car world!
Hope you enjoy this article on the Turbo Cabriolet. It makes some comparisons vs. the coupe. Dont let past reputations re: the Cabriolet fool you.

This looks like it was a real blast, I would love to check out similar event somewhere in the Northeast. I think the one thing they should have added is a built race-car, just to see how these roadcars compare. That's where Im at now, debating whether or not to keep the 997TT or start on a racecar build, something with smaller engine, but definitely less weight, better suspension, and gutted interior.
IMHO it seems that almost ALL of the opinions being given that are negative with respect to the tip are from drivers with little or no seat time in a tip - basically your opinions are worthless (sorry to employ a pejorative term, but it is reality).
The person who posed the query should hear from those who have substantial seat time in a tip (and obviously a 6 speed also). I have about 14K miles on my 997 TT tip (I purchased her in 6/07). I also lived with a 996TT X50 6speed for approx. 3 years and approx. 30K miles. I have tracked the 997TT tip.
Please do NOT believe a word being stated about the tip, including the rpm control statement. You can control the rpms by driving in manual. Furthermore, on a track the tip is best in drive mode where it will hold its gear for 8 seconds. Trust me it is pitifully "old school" to state that the tip is inferior to a 6 speed in any way shape or form, UNLESS you are a pro driver (which you aren't). For the masses (and that includes ALL of us) the tip is truly awesome and with equal drivers will not give up didly **** to a 6 speed. Bottom line to all of you 6 speeders - get some real seat time in a tip before bad mouthing it. The irony is that a Bugatti Veyron is also an automatic tranny and it would kick ALL of our asses. Thats my 2 cents.

Have had my TT997 with tip for about 6 months. Transmission works great in drive mode with sport. I just installed the FVD steering wheel with paddles shifters as I prefer the paddles. FVD Steering wheel is nice as its smaller in diameter and my hands don't hit my quads in a tight turns. You can't go wrong with the tip transmission.
Simply, it is personal preference. I owned a 2007 Turbo Tip coupe (given the above definition my comments have 'worth') for about 6 months and sold it; for me, the car was an anathema. Within two weeks of driving the Tip, my order was in the system for a 2008 Turbo 6 speed. Opinion, of course, but the manual is much more engaging and involving to drive. Compared to the 6 speed, the Tip is a Porsche with a condom as the driver is protected from experiencing acceleration, shifting, braking, etc. by the torque converter.
The Tip is faster? This assertion is meaningless unless the definitional parameters are objectively measured and replicated under a variety of time (speed) to distance intervals. Production variances among cars could easily account for a few tenths of a second. Moreover, unless a Tip driver torque brakes from a standing start, he will have a clear and sustained view of the license plate of a 6 speed.
The cars are quite different. Drive them both, determine which best coincides with your preferences, and buy it.
