racking my brain - tip or 6 speed
IMHO it seems that almost ALL of the opinions being given that are negative with respect to the tip are from drivers with little or no seat time in a tip - basically your opinions are worthless (sorry to employ a pejorative term, but it is reality).
The person who posed the query should hear from those who have substantial seat time in a tip (and obviously a 6 speed also). I have about 14K miles on my 997 TT tip (I purchased her in 6/07). I also lived with a 996TT X50 6speed for approx. 3 years and approx. 30K miles. I have tracked the 997TT tip.

Wow...you're the expert, then. and clearly none of us with manuals have experience the TipS system, and we don't know what we're talking about.

A lot of people that I know who have a manual transmission car don't drive it properly, whether that means neglecting to heel and toe, getting lazy and staying in the wrong gear, or mis-shifting during spirted driving.
Not an expert on the tip, however I feel that the more sporting nature of the Porsche is more satisfying personally with a manual. I have a DB9 and feel that it is more fitting with the auto box.
Performance is very close between the two transmissions so this should not be a reason for choosing. Any expert driver will probably be faster on the track in the tip and would certainly not be slower.
All this aside, I would have the manual just for the pleasure of shifting myself.

I think it largely depends on where you come from when you acquire the car. If you want to buy a Porsche because you want a certain image, then I can understand getting a Tip. Or if being able to drink coffee while driving it is your main concern (WTF?), then I understand getting an automatic. But if you want to actually drive the car like it was engineered and meant to be driven, then you must have a 6 speed. Also, if you are an auto racing enthusiast then you hunger for the extra control a 6 speed gives you and the extra skill it takes to driver it properly. Driving is simply more exciting when YOU drive the car - not some computer system that puts you to sleep and makes driving basically mindless.
I can see the draw to a Tip for those who want the look of a Porsche without the need to learn how to drive it. But that just gives you the look of a Porsche, not the heart of a Porsche.
Also, I think the claim that the Tip "is faster - without question" is pretty bold and somewhat dubious. What do you base that claim on? Now I know that someone will say "but it gets 0-60 in 3.2 secs instead of 3.6 secs." But let's see any of you Tip owners match those numbers. In the right hands, I promise the 6 speed is faster - especially after some simple mods that are impossible on the Tip. Every review I read about the Tip said that it seeks high gears and low revs to quickly and that it is hard to stay in that brutal power zone. For example, Car and Driver said:

Does this mean we'd choose an automatic over a manual in the Turbo? Unless you're planning to spend lots of time at a drag strip, where the all-wheel-drive system might not survive frequent four-wheel burnouts, the answer is no. While at the track the five-speed Tiptronic shifts smoothly and quickly, around town it can become bothersome. First off, Porsche automatics prefer to start in second gear, which seems strange coming from such a performance-oriented company. That means if you dig deep enough into the throttle from a standstill, you get a clunky 2-1 downshift. And the upshifts are often less than crisp, more of a slurring between gears. Also, we'd prefer proper shift paddles—left for downshifts, right for upshifts—mounted behind the steering wheel, instead of the Turbo's toggle switches on the front of the wheel that control shifts in both directions. And, not surprisingly, the response time is noticeably slower than automated manuals like Audi's rapid-shifting dual-clutch DSG. Not helping the Tiptronic's case is the $3420 option price, but maybe at the Turbo's starting price of $123,695, a few grand isn't important.
For the real Porsche experience, my opinion is that you must get the 6 speed. Trying to drive an automatic Porsche is like trying to swim without getting wet.The cayman S I use as a "fun" car - to enjoy the stick feel - and get a bit "connected" with the car. However, performance and handling apart - I actually prefer the tip. The reasons are as follows:-
1. yes. as a DD - I do pick up coffee on the way to work. Its reality for me - plus I like my morning latte :-). So I am not always blasting around in the TT.
2. I believe the shifts are faster and smoother than I can ever be. Great for when I have kids in the car too. - and I have been driving manuals for over 20 years.
3. Porsche claims its faster. :-). More specifically 0-60 - right or wrong - they do.
4. I do feel "connected" at weekends - on my own in the car - when I can then blast around using the manual mode of the tip or working on my techniques to get better at managing the tip when cornering. If I get the urge to blast around in a manual for a while - I take the cayman out. but that has become less and less - since I really do enjoy the TT more.
I think (if you have not already) used a tip - you will be quite happy with it. especially after a few months.
btw. the car and driver article states that the TT starts in 2nd. It does - but starts in 1st in sports mode (when level ironically - on a downhill starts in 2nd). They are somewhat accurate when about town - seems to seek a too higher gear - but about town - doesnt bother me too much. On a spirited drive - operates a lot better and more precise though - does quite a good job of "anticipating" what your driving like.

this is awesome - never did i think posing such an innocent question would bring out such a variety of comments and opposing views - when you think about it, you can't really go wrong in a porsche 911 twin turbo that, whether it be 6speed or tip, will be a lambo, bmw, mb, and everything else, probably f430 too
on another note, i learned that if you plan on tracking your car, many tracks won't let you bring a cab to the party - so that pretty much sums that up

Only consideration for a Tip is if you have lots of stop and go traffic ..then manual is a bust..
If you enjoy driving: manual with a short shifter is a blast....track or not you are more involved & tons more fun.
