Help with new exhaust and CEL
Update - I asked everyone to stay tuned for more on this issue and here is the latest...Several weeks ago, upon the advice of our exhaust engineers, I sent ERSKATEDOC a set of bung extensions to try, while we worked on an updated design of the SpeedTech 997TT exhaust that would cure the 997TT CEL issue that ERSKATEDOC experienced. I just heard from ERSKATEDOC yesterday and he told me that he has had the bung extensions on for over 3 weeks and NO CEL's. He feels the problem has been solved and he is happy with his exhaust. In fact, DOC reiterated he loves the sound and performance of the SpeedTech exhaust and that he will probably keep the exhaust he has on his car, as he really likes it (I had offered to swap him out when we had the new generation ready). Needless to say, I was very pleased to learn of this positive result.
We will now sell the remaining 997TT exhausts in stock with the extensions that we have found to work. The 6speed member price is $1,995.00 (List $2,395.00)

Just curious, what do the bung extensions due to solve the CEL problem? Are you coming out with a new HJS system? I'm thinking about an exhaust modification and like your price and from the sounds of it, others like the sound too.
Hi ERSKATEDOC,
Thanks for the info. I'm a new member so I can't PM you. I had a few more questions if you don't mind. How does the sound (quality & volume) compare with the original exhaust, especially at cruising speeds 70-80? Any annoying drones or vibrations? How noticeable was the performance increase? I assume you have not upgraded your ECU? Do you feel it was worth the $ just to upgrade the exhaust and not the ECU (assuming you did not)? I don't have a lot discretionary $ right now so for me, it will be one or the other for the time being. Thanks.

Hi TT dude,
We have found that the bung extensions prevent the CEL from coming on with our exhaust (by allowing a smaller sample of exhaust to be monitored), therefore, we have remained with our current design for now. A new design is in the works, but will not use HJS cats, as they are expensive and we are trying to remain faithful to our original goal of providing exceptional quality at an attractive price. The new design may simply be a longer bung mount, which appears to work for us. BTW, I spoke to ERSKATEDOC last week and still no CEL, so the bung extensions are working well.

Thanks John. Your explanation makes sense to me but if a smaller quantity of exhaust is being sampled, how will that affect passing CA emmisions test which is required every two years? Obviously, a smog test will not analyze a smaller sample size or am I off track here?
TT,
You're welcome. The problem with the 997TT CEL is that Porsche has made the window of "expected 02 reading" very tight and when the car sees anything, even mildy different, it triggers the light. This does not mean the gasses are not being effectively cleaned from an emmissions standpoint, just that the ECU is not seeing exactly what it has been programmed to accept as normal.
That said, our 997TT exhaust uses the identical technology as our 996TT exhaust with 200 cell cats. We have sold many of these in CA over the past 18 months and have not had any problems with emissions testing. The 200 cell cats still do thier job of cleaning the exhaust gasses.
