Help with new exhaust and CEL
Help with new exhaust and CEL
I just installed my new 200 cell SpeedTech exhaust with fabspeed tips. Looks great and the sound is outstanding - Exactly what I was looking for....... However
After 1 day, the check engine light appeared. The OBD code is P0420 & P0430 = Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold
What suggestions does the list have to deal with this problem?
UPDATE (7/22): I love the exhaust (sound and performance). Im going to keep the current system on until they have a new exhaust system with the correct cats. They offered a full refund or exchange for the new system when they work out the bugs. Im going for the exchange when the correct the cat problem. John at Speedtech has been great and very responsive.
UPDATE (10/28): No more CEL after the O2 bung extension added. I decided to keep these pipes because I love the sound and feel. I went with the fabspeed tips because I like their look the best. I get a lot of comments from other porsche owners about the sound because it is so deep.
I love driving thru a parking garage and setting off multiple car alarms!!!

08's are very sensitive on the cat sensor's , more than the 07 by far..., Only a flash on the ECU will cure the problem...
There are some flash's that can eliminate the cat sensors all together
The GIAC I have been told has a Euro mod that can be flashed at the time .
I have a 08 with Fabspeed exhaust/ headers and driving normal ( slow) sometimes set's the off the CEL
I just disconect the battery, like today and all is fine for the time being.
Iam going to let Vividracing to the flash next week and install a new exhaust system for free...
Will probly do a plenum install also...
I would like to be able to run Fabspeed cat-bupass pipes ( no Cat's )and there std exhaust, Lower temp's and Iam very curious about the sound with no cat's
Gee-Bee

Just a thought, check the install and make sure all the O2 sensor cables are free and not touching anything. It is very easy to burn or fray one of the 02 sensor wires on something like a pulley or an exhaust header. Otherwise it might be a bad cat.
I think you have a bad set of cats, unfortunately some of the systems out there use a more free flowing/but CEL prone.Get meter down at sears and readout the codes. They have one that's cheap and can clear them as well.
We use HJS catalysts. They are the only cat on the market that will keep the light off on the 2008 cars. Even on cars without aftermarket software, we do not have CEL issues.
Again, that is the wrong way to tune a car. Proper hardware combined with proper software will work just like the OEM components that came on the car.
Thank you for posting that. Most forum users just keep that type of damaging info off the boards and work it out offline. However, if it is not said, other owners will just keep getting caught in the same trap. I commend you.

Hi Mike (ERSKATEDOC),
After looking into it, apparently with the new generation 997 turbo - if there is any different reading from the 02 sensors (from factory set tight limits), it will cause the ECU to detect error, the cats are not bad, its just that Porsche made everything so tight that any aftermarket exhaust on the new cars, if reading much differently then the original cats, will cause a CEL. This was not the case on the 996TT, as we have used these same 200 cell cats with great success and no lights. This is a new product for us and we are learning. We are now working on fitting the proper cats to future production runs and in the meantime, I have PM'ed you with a few interim solutions. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but I can assure you that we will get your situation corrected, as soon as possible. I'm glad to hear you like the sound and performance so much - we'll get the CEL squared away for you...
Best Regards,
John

its just that Porsche made everything so tight that any aftermarket exhaust on the new cars, if reading any differently then the original cats, will cause a CEL.
That statment you made above is false. It takes a very special catalyst to keep the light off in the '08's. I just checked out the pictures on your website and you are not using them. They are very distinct in shape.
We are using that cat in our mufflers and do not have problems. I will even go so far as to tell you who makes it. The company is called HJS. It is the only cat on the market that will work. They are wildly expensive with another price increase due shortly.
If you start using them, my gut is telling me that your $2395 exhaust will no longer be $2395. Trust me...
Good luck.
ERSKATEDOC is having problems with the cat's on his new exhaust system..
As you can see the cat's are welded on , rather than like the Faspeed that can be changed in a few minutes to something else like : Cat by-pass pipes or a newer style of Cat...
This was the feature I was looking for in a system
There are other systems out there for a TT, But the service I get from Fabspeed is the same service I give to my aircraft customer's...
