Rev Limiter

Does anyone ever hit the rev limiter? Today I was doing some "spirited driving" and missed 3rd gear. The engine revved up to about 7,000 RPM. I have run it to 7000 RPM and slightly above in gear - both during acceleration and engine braking. I don't think it hit the limiter. At what point does it hit the limiter and is there any risk to doing so?

**** happens. I don't think that it would harm it. I asked some gearhead friends of mine and they said that you could bounce it off the rev limiter for a while before any damage would occur - just like Gran Turismo! I hope they are right. My car is running fine though. What the hell, the gauge goes up to 8000!

what do you mean by "missed 3rd gear"? were you redlining 4th and trying upshift to 5th but ended down in 3rd? you can blow your engine on a money shift. rev limiter's not gonna do anything. that only helps on upshifts.

I was in second going for third and I didn't get the shifter all the way up. I was around 6000 RPM when I made the shift. I thought I was Lewis Hamilton for a second and tried to be quick. So I put on the gas and revved it up in neutral just for a second. It made a sweet bark though.

I believe the stock RL is set at 6750, in a 'flash' they generally bump it up a bit. Keep in mind, everytime you go above 6750 it gets recorded as a type 2 error, regardless of where the RL is set. I had mine flashed recently and will have Tony turn back the RL to 6750 to avoid any problems.
In the scenario you mentioned, the only way it could go to 7000 in neutral would be if the RL had been bumped up, a type 1. A type 2 is like a mechanical overide of the RL, ie bad downshift, etc, those can bend a valve or blow a motor in theory. In reality the motor is good beyond 8400 rpm. So, don't worry.

Invest in the Durametric software and you can see if you have any overrevs in the 6 ranges. www.durametric.com

Coming out of an M6 with Eisenman exhaust I have bounced it a few times on the first to second shift. The actual time in gear (just over a second I'm guessing), lower rev limit and the fact that I was used to a different audible cue (8200 rpm v10 with loud exhaust) has made this a small challenge. I like to try and "feel" it as opposed to looking at the tach. I'm still getting used to the tactile and audible cues.

Today however I do pick up my modded car (SPI Stage II) and the tactile and audible cues should increase - dramatically!! So no more excuses for poor missed shifts

Barrister, although I don't own a 997, I believe your car should be just fine.

The function of the limiter is to prevent damage by over-revving and thus having a point where the fuel is cut and thus your RPMs drop to prevent damage. Then they build again after the drop and you hear it as the bounce as the cycle continues. Hopefully you then realize the mis-shift quickly and stop flooring it thus no harm is done as the engine functions WNL, albeit a bit high. No permanent damage should occur from it although I doubt anyone would recommend hitting your limiter for more than a brief instant.

It does have limitations as members have said. When you miss a 5th-4th and grab 2nd instead, damage occurs because now your driveline is attached to your engine and is spinning way too fast for 2nd and causes your engine to rev way past its normal limit and past the limiter which cannot cut fuel as it's being forced to spin up to a dangerous speed that the components were not meant to handle and thus explode/disintegrate.
Ex. back when the CGT came out and a journalist did exactly above and the engine registered ~12000 RPM before exploding.

So moral of the story: you car will forgive you for being Lewis on upshifts, on downshifts, not so much.
Hope this helps, and isn't just known info.

that's exactly what happened to me. I was racing my friend. car in 3rd gear close to the red area. supposed to shift to 4th but miss shifted to 2nd. I saw the RPM went over to the red area . hopefully nothing happened to my engine as this was 2 weeks ago and the car still running fine

It happens . A dramatic error could cause engine damage but vrooooom ... put, put, put (oh Sh"t ) must have been factored in as an occasional thing by the engine design technicians and tuners .

I face the biggest issue when I drive the Civic si immediately after driving the Porsche .
