What does IPD Plenum actually do?

I was wondering what the IPD Plenum actully does in the engine. Is is considered an upgrade? For example if I want to do a Giac chip should I do the Plenum change with it? How does it fit in with a chip and exhaust upgrade?

A plenum basically is a device used to remove money from your wallet.
I would be surprised if a plemum alone makes much horsepower, maybe as part of a package it would do something. Anybody have some dyno numbers to help this guy?

There are dyno sheets floating around, that show reasonable gains from upgrading to the IPD plenum.

Uhm, let me see if i can find some on the boards archives..

EDIT -

Found one, after a quick search. I know the owner of this 997 turbo, and he is not the guy making them

if it really does that increase of hp/torque then it isnt priced right! dont you think so?

If you look at a stock plenum, then look at one from RSS, you will get the idea its quite simple it diverts air flow more efficiently, and therefore HP, gains yes its real .I think most people cant believe Porsches R&D had such an oversight I would not doubt it if they change this design in the future, pictures are posted on both stock & mod

The plastic factory plenum is T shaped. The IPD plenum is shaped to allow better airflow/increase HP/Torque. Similiar to how an after-market Turbo exhaust allows the engine to exhale better the IPD plenum allows better inhalation. The last pic below is from a stock Turbo vs. w/ plenum. Someone already posted a dyno showing results of the plenum on a Turbo w/ chip/exhaust.

Makes sense that these should do as claimed.

In the early 60's I reworked the intake manifold on my MGA in a fashion similar to what IPD has done here.

I then also used larger SU carbs from a MK10 Jaguar.

Wow what a difference!

So, the analogy IPD made to better flow exhaust is very appropriate to the intake side as well.

I have never used this device, but I can see how it could definitely enhance intake flow by providing a less restrictive air flow path path as well as balancing the internal air flow with few eddy currents and reisitance.

I didn't do a before and after dyno run, but I cannot honestly tell the difference with the addition of the IPD plenum. I had previously had a Cargraphic (loud) exhaust installed, and quite possibly in combination there is some increase in power.

If I had it to do over I wouldn't bother unless I was going for the full meal deal (chip, exhaust, bigger turbos and intercoolers), which I'm not.

I believe I read in an automag that the GT2 has a reworked plenum compared to the TT, so I think there are gains to be had here.

I have PERSONALLY tested and dyno'd in excess of 300+ runs on my dyno to quantify the results of the IPD product. European Car magazine has also been here to test the product to dispell any rumors or to completely nulify the product. Michael Febbo from European Car magazine and myself did our due diligence to quantify the results, same day, same car, no other modifications etc. I can say as a 3rd party in this situation, the product works, and works well.
