Cross-post: GT-R versus 997TT at Thunderhill

I had both cars at Thill yesterday, and posted a review over on the GT-R forum:

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...underhill.html

Please post you replies over there, unless you want to chime in and say the GT-R is a Japanese crap-box, or that we should not mention GT-R on this forum, in which case please post below.

Dido from Gotbluemilk.com. If I had known he would take those close-ups, I would have washed the car. :-)

Your first time of 2:08 is very impressive. Do you find the car easier to drive than the 997? I've never been at Thunderhill, but the map makes it look like a track that favors high HP cars with longer straights.

Easier to drive @ 8/10ths for sure. Will need to push GT-R more before I can compare 9/10th+.

I am comfortable sliding the 997TT a bit at high speeds, but I need more seat time in GT-R before attempting. Slow speed sliding seems controllable, so probably a bravery thing, not a car capability thing.

I'm still confused on how a 3800lb, 480hp GT-R can be as fast as a 3600lb 700hp modified 997TT. Is it magic? It's gotta be magic...

^If a 3800 lb car could do that, just imagine the V-Spec.

I am curious. Do you think that the GT-R uses it's all wheel drive better than the TT? They are both computer controlled differentials could the TT's AWD system be altered with a software change, if in fact that would be better?

More like 4000lbs v. 3500 lbs.

997TT pulls on GT-R big time on the straights, but I am rarely WOT for long in the TT on the track, so power delta is not that big of a deal. Plus, GT-R has better low-end TQ and less turbo lag, which helps it.

My only theory is some combo of (i) better AWD / stability systems and (ii) as a result of (i), car tempts driver to push a little harder. I'm pretty sure a pro driver would be faster in my TT (as modded).

Subjectively, the AWD and PSM systems in the GT-R feel better for track use. Don't know how to describe, but GT-R "intervenes" more, but in a way that lets you go faster. 997TT systems seem primarily geared toward safety, not speed.

I have no idea if a software change could make them closer.

Should AWD make any kind of difference at all on a dry track?

I think your previous comment about being able to use WOT on a track hits the nail on the head. I don't think your EVT700 kit adds nearly as much as better suspension, which is the 997TT's biggest weakness.

I can def feel AWD working for me on dry track.

FYI, My 997TT has Bilstein damtronics and an pretty aggressive alignment (-2.1 in front)

700 hp means nothing on a road course unless you have the brakes and suspension to match. Not only that, but if you arent on some serious rubber, it's even worse than stock.

Hence the reason F1crazydriver can go faster than both in a 996 TT with a flash and bootleg tires.

He just mentioned having damptronics and agressive alignment. The stock turbo brakes are more than capable of handling the added power, especially if they are PCCBs.

damptronics vs 700 hp???

It takes much more than that, bushings, sways, control arms etc that are designed for putting all that power to the pavement. Slapping on a set of coils isnt going to cut it. And that's the simple version. Look at all the guys who track 600-700 hp cars on the regular and see how many of them just have a set of coilovers and that's it.

I'd bet the car can easily go as fast with stock power levels and that same suspension.
