tough decision, some experience needed...

Hi to all!

I’d like to get your honest opinion of which car should I get. I’ll try to explain my reasoning and some of you with longer experience of sports cars all comments are highly appreciated.

I’d definitely would like to get LP560 there is no doubt about it, but…

I live in Helsinki, Finland we have no Lamborghini dealer here. Closest is in Estonia, which is 5 hour boat ride away. Our roads are not really bad, but they are not like in Las Vegas or Miami (in where I have driven G for several days).

So, I have been thinking of Porsche 911 turbo Sportec SP550 model. I have never driver a Porsche nor I have never really liked the looks. New turbo is nice both performance wise and looks are ok (especially tuned). What really maters to me is acceleration time and four wheel drive. So there is really no other option for me out there than P or G. Also for your info why this matter is very important for me is that both cars are $400k+ here in Finland…

So I summarize +’s and –‘s of both cars for me, please provide me some overviews what should I do.

Gallardo LP560-4
+ Looks better than anything
+ Sound
+ Speed
+ Fun factor
+ I have driven one and liked it
- Reliability?
- No local dealer (any issue would mean shipping car to another country)
- Servicing it once a year would mean shipping it to Estonia once again
- Purchase process is more complicated including customs paperwork

Porsche 911 Turbo
+ Speed
+ Easy to buy and resell
+ Easy to service
+ Test drive will be arranged for me
+ Sportec SP550 package is fast
+ Tuning is very easy and there is lots of options out there (installation can be handled locally)
- Never been a huge fan of the looks
- Have no idea of the handling or the fun-factor
- “Just” 3,6l engine

What do you guys think? Any experience you could share… THANKS!!!

sounds like you would have to ship car back and forth for service on the lambo, so I say no on lambo, but up to you if you want to take all that time to setup for service

porsche = people who like to drive / don't care about 200k car that doesn't look "exotic"
lambo= "bling bling" / people who love to say how much HP they have / crazy drivers

If you plan to use the car often I would say Turbo, if its going to be a weekend warrior and you dont mind the shipping process then get the lambo.

I drove a friend's gallardo a couple weeks ago and the general impression i got is that the car is definitely fast and fun, but it doesnt lend itself as a daily driver.

Also despite the reliability improving, I think the turbo is more likely to give you less headaches maintenance wise.

But, ultimately it will be very difficult for you to get the Porsche to appeal to you visually like the lambo, especially if you dont like the stock design to begin with.

I won't say it will be a daily driver, but I'd like to drive it every day if I like. Not only when the moon is right. I will never buy a car as an investment, every car in my carage must be part of my life not the other way around :-)

Now, I want something that is fast off the line and lots of fun to drive. I'm not just sure how much maintenence these sportscars require or what to expect reliabilitywise. I don't want to be worrying about broken $400k car too often...

If someone gave me a Lambo I would sell it on the same day -even if it meant not having the Porsche. Someone on this forum once wrote an analogy where he compared a Lambo to a bi polar supermodel and the 997tt to a wife. Although I don't compare cars to people I feel that outside of flashy looks the Lambo is very disappointing . It's reliability , comfort , even the way it drives just don't thrill me at all. It does attract attention and I'm sure at 400+K in Finland it will probably attract a lot of attention but that isn't always good either .

The Porsche has everything the Lambo lacks --except the flashy looks . It's understated appearance to me is what adds to its classyness , along with it's reliability, and most importantly that it will rip the Lambo in performance .

For me the decision is easy. But it's you who has to decide for himself. Good luck.

Could someone describe how they are different to drive? Is Turbo TT as loud as G?

I would be hard pressed to pass on an LP560. The exhaust note is the sweetest music I have heard yet

I agree with Eclou. Only because I have had a TT and a GT3. I am at my age starting to look at cars I have never owned and Lambo (especially the 560) would be hard to pass up

But since you havent driven a 911 you wont be dissappointed either way.

I think with a techart or rinspeed aero kit, the 997TT would look just as exotic as the lambo. Are both cars really the same price over there? It's hard to imagine but if it is, that really stinks.

When I buy a car, I buy it because of what I can do to it to make it a reflection of my style, taste and personality. When modding a Lambo, there aren't as many options as for the Porsche, and the lead times on most aftermarket lambo parts are always going to be much longer than 997TT stuff. You also get more bang for the buck as far as power upgrades are for the 997TT vs the lambo.

Also reliability is an issue too however if you don't keep your cars very long it probably will not matter.

I have a Turbo modded with Bilstein and Cargraphic exhaust. I recent drove a Lambo Gallardo (and Ferrari F430, Ford GT40, Corvette).

My impression:

Lambo: A fantastic car and I would love to have one, but only as a weekend car. It has an exhaust howl to end all exhaust howls. Better than Ferrari in my book and the best of ALL exhaust notes that I have heard -- and I've heard a lot. The only engine in the group that matches the Turbo when it comes to the feel of torque and power. I love that V10 -- no turbo lag.
But... car feels a little heavy, and steering feel is heavy and insulated. Same with road and chassis feedback, very good, but a tad too insulated. This car doesn't feel Italian like the Ferrari at all. I know, because it's not.

Porsche Turbo, *MODDED*: Better driving postion and visibility, much friendlier in big cities to drive, better chassis/road feedback, better steering feedback.

Both are great cars, Turbo clearly a much better daily driver, Lambo much more "exotic."
I would love to have a Lambo, but if I could only have one car, it would be the Turbo -- mainly on issues of chassis and road feedback. OTOH, if exotic factor and look are what you are looking for, the Lambo wins. It is so gorgeous. Just my 2 cents, YMMV.

As far as exhaust note, a stock Turbo has no chance whatsoever against Lambo's exhaust note. A modded Turbo with after-market exhaust systems will fare MUCH better, could be quite aggressive and as loud or even louder if you wish, but the character will never be the same as the Lambo's NA V-10.
