How to cool down your 997TT

Are the 997 turbos equipped with some sort of self cooling system. I know their is usually a fan that comes on a few minutes after I turn the car off. If this fan is not functioning properly will it throw a fault?

I have been told that after driving the car hard it is best to run the car around the block at low rpms to let the cool air flow through and cool the turbos down or let the car idle for awhile in your garage before turning it off. Is this necessary?

Thanks!

I always do. I've been told that you want to bring the rotational speed of the turbines back down by letting it idle for a bit. I'm not sure how true it is, but it seems logical. I've been doing that with all my turbo charged cars German or Japanese.

Actually, companies like HKS and Greddy sell turbo timers that will let the engine idle after you have removed the keys. I've just never seen it installed on a Porsche before.

From wiki :

A turbo timer is a device designed to keep an automotive engine running for a pre-specified period of time in order to automatically execute the cool-down period required to prevent premature turbo wear and failure. After a period of driving when a turbocharger has been working hard, it is important to let the engine run at idle speed for a period of time, allowing the compressor assembly to cool from the lower gas temperatures in both the exhaust and intake tracts. At the same time the lubricating oil from the engine is able to circulate properly so the turbine won't burn the lubricating oil that would otherwise be trapped within the charger with the turbine rotating at high speed. With regard to modern automotive turbochargers, the need for a turbo timer can be eliminated by simply ensuring the car does not produce any 'boost' (during driving) for several minutes prior to the ignition being shut off.
I don't think the 997TT need such jobs as the VTG turbo designs and oil circulate system are perfact for any stages.Maybe you only need to start worry after you changed other bigger turbo kits eg. GT series like those 996tts got...Those larger and more powerful but low tech..

Doesn't the 997TT also have a water cooled system for the turbos?

Cooling

I just dog it for a few blocks before I get home. On the track, in addition to a cool down lap, I let it idle for a few minutes.
No worries.

997 Turbo and GT2's have and auxiliary water pump to move coolant through the turbos after the engine is shut off. Nothing wrong with letting the vehicle idle a bit after hard driving. I don't recall if the owners manual says anything concerning this. I'd recommend against after market turbo timer on your modern Porsche.

I saw a turbo timer on a stock scion tc.... hahaha
