Stupid Question(sorry)

This morning while driving to work I ran over something on the freeway that sounded horrible.I thought for sure I got a flat tire and cracked my rim but when I got out of the car everything seemed fine.I might be paranoid know but it seems that when I brake and take my hands of the steering wheel the steering wheel kind of shimmeys. Also when I am driving at arond 40 mph and take my hands of the steering wheel it kind of moves back and forth. Is this normal or when I ran over something could have done something?

Depending on what you hit and how fast you were traveling, it is possible you bent a rim or knocked the car out of alignment.

wheel/tire will need balancing if a weight popped off and if you hit hard enough you probably need an alignment. Probably no need to worry, but if you do these two things and still have an actual shimmy then look further.

Your rim is most likely bent and see if a bubble appears on your sidewall, means u tore the tire from the inside and need a new one....But from what u said 99% bent rim

If the rim is bent do you need to purchase a new rim.(Thanks for all your answers!). Does the movement of the steering wheel when braking seem like a bent rim?

You will need a new rim if the wheel is monoblock . With a three piece wheel you may not .

If it happens while braking but not while coasting, then it sounds more like damage to the brakes, obviously. It could be a warped rotor, though that's unlikely the result of running over something -- more likely the result of heavy brake use followed by, say, engaging the emergency brake and letting the brakes cool unevenly. Not very likely. On the other hand, heat shields are commonly dislodged and can cause vibration or noise while braking.

Get the car on a lift and compare what you see on one side to what you see on the other.

When you are driving lets say 40 mph and you remove your hands from the steering wheel on a flat street should there be any movement of the steering wheel.Mine definetly has some movement but when I drive my wifes Mercedes is seems pretty still. If I take it to the dealer what should I complain about?Bent wheel or bad alignment?

Complain that the steering wheel vibrates. Either you're going to let them work the problem or you're going to work it yourself.

If you have someone else debug the problem, then it's likely that they will check the alignment and then pull the rims off and test them for roundness. Actually, it could also be wheel bearings, depending on how much mileage they have.

If you debug it yourself, it's easier to do a visual inspection -- checking the alignment is quite difficult without proper tools, ditto rim-roundness. Start with the obvious and then escalate from there.

There are machines the straighten bent rims...I know of a couple places that do it and fix the rim perfectly for 110 bucks

Angry

Just took it to the dealer and I have 2 bent rims. They want to replace the 2 rims and tires and something in the steering that Porsche says should be replaced when you run over something like I did.The cost will be 4000 to 5000 dollars but I am trying to run it thru my insurance minus my 400 deductible...
