Turbo Engine Heat

Just picked up a mint condition '07 Turbo with 1800 miles with some really nice options. I sold my 1996 993 (non-Turbo) in 12/08 and have searched long and hard for the right car. Cannot believe the brutal acceleration on this car. I have been living in the stone age with my old 993! Anyway, after driving it today, I noticed that the engine lid was extremely hot, especially under the rear spoiler and the heat stayed on the rear of the car for over an hour. I was going to leave the engine lid open to cool it down, but saw there was an engine light and I didn't want to drain the battery. I did not hear any fan come on. The tempurature where I was driving was around 72 degrees. Is this normal condition for the Turbo to be so hot after driving? Thanks for your help on this. I will post pics soon

Yes, it's normal. As long as your temp gauge is not indicating overheat, don't worry. The more power your car has, the more heat it produced.

Oil temp should not climb above it's normal temperature even under very hard driving in summer heat. If the temp is climbing in steep hill, and then lower again in cruising/ normal load, the cooling capacity might not enough. The thermostat should be able to maintain constant temp.
The oil viscosity and lubrication properties will degrade as it goes over 100C. You better check with your workshop. If they said there is nothing wrong with the engine, install additional oil cooler.
If you don't want to install additional cooler, use high viscosity oil like 5-50 or 10-60.
But if the temp reach red line in the gauge, you must install additional cooler.

Electric fan will come on to cool off engine after driveing the car hard or in hot weather. If you fan didn't come on the engine temp must not of been to hot. 72 degrees isn't very hot. If it was in the 90 degree weather I'm sure you would hear the fan kick on.

My fan comes on almost every time I drive my car except for a short ride in winter. I would have that checked out if I were you.

we had a trip all Porsche group, it was a fast driving up the mountains the weather was like 36-38C and my oil temp went up to 110C. The water temp remain as always.

When we stopped i checked all cars and some were up to 120C (oil temp)

Even the new PDK Carrera S
The Porsche mechanics said that this is normal after some hard driving in such a hot weather.

Great info here; the dealership tells me to only use 0-40, would it hurt anything to use other grades?
Also, where to get a cooler for the engine?? anyone has any pics?

It's a Porsche!

The car is well very protected by super sensitive monitors so just keep an eye on the gauges and all will be well. I have larger intercoolers etc. and recently drove very hard in 107F+ temps on the track (about 140F track surface). The water temp never moved but the oil temp did go up from 200 to 220 which is fine and normal under these conditions. If the water and oil temps go way up you will get a warning and then it's time to worry. In the mean time you're ok but I can appreciate the heat concern - the engine gets warm but it's designed for it. If you haven't done it yet, get a new exhaust to reduce back pressure and heat. No worries - enjoy! It's the other cars at the track who are trying to cool off their engines - our cars are fine. Have a look at the manual when you have time - check out the water and oil coolant systems (wow!).
Hope this helps - enjoy your new drive.
K.

My car has larger turbos, 4,5" intercoolers e.t.c. When i had some fast hill climbing in hot whether 42C = 108F the engine (oil) temp moved upwards to 110C = 230 maby a bit more. This happen on hard driving in corners where the car uses 2nd and 3rd gear only. The engine (water) temp remain as it is always.

When we stopped i checked the other guys oil temp and all where above mine. When i stopped the car and let it idle for some time the temp dropped to normal it 5-7 mins.

Is something wrong with all this?

Bro your totally fine.

I live in FL and it gets to 90-95*F now in the summer. Just cruising around the city I get the oil temp up to 200-215*F(crusing) and its nothing to worry about. I've gotten my oil temp up to 225-230*F once from driving it really hard on some nice corners @ about 45-80mph. Thats what an engine is supposed to do.(Gets really HOT, when Driving it Really HARD)
