DME READOUT, is this car okay to purchase?
I'm looking at picking up this car shortly and just had the PPI done along with the DME readout. The SA said it was in range "5" 11 times and thats okay and nothing to worry about. They didn't print me out anything showing the tires, brakes, etc... but basically said they know the car very well and actually just completed the 10KMI service on it (it has 11KMI now).
Please let me know if what the SA is saying true concerning the range 5 issue and what long term effect it may have. I really doubt there will be any issues, but I also don't want to have any problems during resale with new buyerS.
TIA

If you check out the 997 section, there was a recent debate about the relevance of over revs. IMHO, anything over a range 2 (ie range 3, 4, 5, 6) comes from poor driving technique and possible abuse. While the engine is probably okay, you have to question what else on the car may have been subjected to abuse.
With so many turbos available, I'd walk away.

cmos: its being sold by a BMW dealer so no CPO.
bbywu: i don't think you will find a USED turbo with ranges 2 and under only. i actually just sold my 07 turbo and it had 270 3 ranges & 36 4 ranges and I babied the hell out of that car

When I bought my 996TT used, I was patient and found one with only type 1 over revs. I am sure with the vast number of used turbos available that you will find one with no range 3 or 4s. Again...we could argue until the cows come home the significance of brief over revs...everyone has their own philosophy.
How do you get this info? I've hit the limiter a few times in my car and I'm curious now how this will look for mine?

I know type 1 and 2, but what is the relevance of the other 4 types?
Remember the '11 type 5's' refers to eleven ignitions, less than a second.

2SCOOPS: you would pay any Porsche dealer to plug your car into their computer and print it out. Ranges from $145-350

Motronics 7.8 distinguishes over revs into 6 categories, in increments of about 2000RPM over redline.
The only thing that bothers me was that the range 5 was pretty recent.
Either way, enjoy!
The scan above shows that the car has a total of 329.6 operating hours. Both the range 4 and 5 occurred at 309 hours (posted under the range, to the right of the number of ignitions), which is about 20 hours from when it was last driven. The range 3 occurred 3 hours prior to it's last being driven.
If the car has been for sale at that dealership for a while, there is a strong possibility that the BMW staff has been having fun with it. Look for donut shaped tire marks in the back parking lot.

i am in process of buying a used 997s and it has cpo warranty. the dealer did ppi on it yesterday . I asked the dealer for DME scan and they told me flat out if there are range 5 or range 6 your cpo warranty will be cancelled . range 1 to range 4 is ok.
I agree with you regarding the ranges of 3 and 4: they are SAFE. Too many paranoid internet "Porsche DME experts" on this forum and few with experience in owning and driving these cars. Go ahead and buy it. Get an extended third party warranty if the range 5 bothers you (it shouldn't). If you want no ranges, order a new one to spec and wait for 6 months.

To the OP. Pass it up and find better.
