Considering used 997tt
Considering used 997tt
hey 6speedonline,
I am currently in a lease with a 335(1 year remaining). I am utterly sick of this car and have placed it on swapalease.
Thinking of a used turbo, 2007 or 2008.
Few questions:
1) Do you guys believe the used prices will drop down in january, due to the facelifted turbo being released?
2) If i buy a 2007 with like 10,000 miles in good condition. Can i extend the warranty via Porsche certified pre owned? If i read the site correctly, i must have a 100 point inspection done to the car, and if applicable i pay $2,000 for the extended warranty.
So would i be able to do this?
Thank you all.

I agree with handdoc. If you buy a 2008 CPO with a relatively late in-service date during calendar year, 2008, you will end up with a longer warranty than the original owner had! The 6-year CPO warranty is identical to the 4-year one that comes with new cars. No deductibles and exclusions compared to the original new car warranty from what I understand.
As for a decline in value, I sure hope not! (I just picked up an '08 CPO 2 weeks ago). I don't think holding out will save you that much money and here is my reasoning:
1. I think the facelift is minor enough that most people (not the guys on this board, they are experts) be able to tell the difference.
2. The engine block used in the 997.1 TT is tried and tested on the turbo platform, the 997.2 TT, while it will be a great car/engine, is pretty new to the TT platform and will take some time for vendors to provide modifications to.
3. If I was looking for a Tiptronic TT, I might hold off until January as the PDK is completely different. However, if you are looking for a 6-speed, I think you're safer buying it now compared to the Tip. A similar if not same 6-speed will be mated to the 997.2 TT.
4. Financing rates (if that's what you're doing) are great right now. Given the slow sales of some cars, dealerships are as willing now to cut you a deal as they have ever been. I purchased my 997 TT from a Premier dealer here in Houston and had one of the best car-related experiences I've had. While things are slow now, they could certainly pick up in the new year. If the economy does improve (a BIG if), you could find that these cars actually hold their price or maybe inch up a bit.
5. The joy of driving that car (if it is the RIGHT car) today vs. 3 months from now is priceless in my opinion. I too wanted to wait for better deals, but when you get into the dealership and actually get down to talking price on the car, I bet you will be pleased at what you can work out.
That being said, whenever you do decide on picking this car up, I am sure you will be thrilled. The 335 is a nice car, but this is something COMPLETELY different. Be prepared to smile more often than you ever thought possible in a car. Hell, I'm even mildly happy in traffic. Every time I walk into the garage and see the car, I'm still a bit skeptical that it's actually mine. Enjoy! Looking for the right car is part of the fun!
For what it's worth, these are a couple of trends I noticed when I started
looking for 997 TT's a couple of months ago.
Prices for cars in the NE were extremely high compared to South, Southwest and West Coast.
The highest quantity of cars was in FL with medium to high asking prices. However, it seems they are having some issue moving some as the dealerships continued to call me back a month later offering deals on the cars I had inquired about.
West Coast pricing varied from high to very competitive. And, you don't have to worry about snow/salt on the undercarriage if you plan on garaging during the winter.
Texas dealers in Houston and Dallas both had good prices and solid selection. When I was looking, I think the asking price on these cars were generally more reasonable and as such, the dealers may or may not come down as much as a FL or CA dealer.
Some of the cars I was looking at up in NY, CT and PA were asking 10-15K over their better optioned peers in other parts of the country. That's certainly enough $$ justification to ship something from far away if you are are comfortable with the car and seller.
Hope this helps. Good luck guys!
Thx very much for that insight. Ive subconciously started to notice this as well but you've brought out in the open for me. I thought I was seeing this but wasnt certain. It's not very easy to shop a car out of state as I really like to kick the tires but in this case, the benefits of doing so seem unavoidable.

You can always pay for a PPI through a 3rd party. Also, I know the guys on this forum are generally great at helping out another owner or soon-to-be owner. So if you see something in an area that you can't get to, shoot a msg out on the board and someone may just be able to help you.
Also, if you can get 90% of the stuff done and want to do a final inspection, I think flying to wherever you're going to buy the car is a great way to seal the deal and if it's not too far, you could even drive it home and get to know her.
