How much better is the 997 than 996?
What are the main differences in these 2? I have a chance to pick up a nice 2005 TURBO S cab which is the most powerful stock of all 996's or
for 12k more I can get a 997 turbo coupe. I will keep the car 2-3 years and it will be a daily driver 7-8k per year for miles. The 05 s only has 17k for miles and the 997 turbo has 37k for miles. Thoughts?

I currently drive my 07 turbo daily and its wonderful, hope you enjoy whichever you choose
I have a 2005 Turbo S Cab and it is a great car. But as the 99 Turbo evolves, each variation is better than the previous. The 997TT.1 is a great car. The interior is much better. The engine has a different engine block than the 996TT. The 07 with 34K miles seems like he/she drover the car every day. The Turbo S only having 17K was driven a lot less. My car has 8900 miles and I drive it on the weekend and to PCA meetings.
Get a 997TT with lower miles and pay the difference.

thanks guys. it looks like a local car has entered the field of possibilities it's an 2004 TURBO CAB no x50 package but it's 16k less than the 05 cab turbo S.
Is the 05 turbo S that much better for the same miles? I have decided against the 997 since the miles are at 45k.

When I bought a 997 TT last year I'd just driven a 996:
Shifter on 996 was indecisive. I didn't know where the 2-3 shift was.
Clutch on 996 was too long a throw for my liking
I want to say that the 996 steering wheel position didn't suit me as well either.
When I got into the 997, it was just right... all of it.
Later, the salesman pointed out that 996 foot wells are constricted-compared to 997
I was so impressed with the 997, my first Porsche, I owned it from Feb-Sept, put 11,000 miles on it, took it to Laguna Seca from Wyoming for a run...and traded it in for a 2011 Turbo S that I hope to go to Stuttgart and pick up, mid year.

When I started my search for cars it began with the 996 model. Unfortunately the dealer had a 997 on the lot as well. Test drive both and park them next to each other… If you can’t feel and see a huge difference then maybe you’ll be comfortable with the 996… For me, and many others it seems, the 997 is so far ahead in many categories that I could no longer consider the older version. Worth noting is the budget… when you look at similar mileage vehicles there is very wide separation in price…

From reading through posts many people love the price point of the 996 but desire the 997. Many end up looking at higher mileage 997tt in attempt to close the gap.

If you can justify the $$$ then there truly shouldn’t even be a debate…
