997TT steering feel too light?
997TT steering feel too light?
Hi guys,
I have a 2007 997TT, love it so far.
Only thing I really wanna change is the steering feel. Used to have a 03 996C2, steering of the C2 feels much stiffer/heavier. Unlike my 997TT, kinda soft as a sports car, maybe too user friendly just like the hydrolic clutch?
I personally like more heavier/stiffer steering. Is it vary from model years?
Do you guys have the same feeling? Anything I can do to make the steering stiffer???
I appreciate your reply,
Thx,
Alan

I think the 997TT is stiff and borderline numb compared to the 2WD Carreras at least! Dropping it and tossing on some sways helped but still, light is definately not how mine feels. I do have the thicker steering wheel leather which definately has more meat to it which can alter how it feels in your hands crazy as it sounds.

However, your reply kinda scared me. Sth wrong with my car? what's your MY? 07 as well?
I have the thick techart multifunction steering wheel and RSS sways, but doesn't seem to help. Still feel kinda light.....
Cheers,
Suspension mods, tightening up the front and getting a more track oriented alignment will give you some more feedback and a tighter overall feel.
If the car hasn't been aligned since you picked it up check it out, depending on how it was driven and how long it went since an alignment could be a bit off even if it tracks straight.

The steering does get lighter under hard acceleration.
How would you describe the steering on an MB or a Lexus???
Try an alignment and sways like the others stated, but first have the car checked out.

Thx a million for all the replies. Really appreciate you guys' help.
I would discribe MB or Lexus, if the scale is 1 is heavist and 10 is the lightest. I would say MB and Lexus are like 9. And I would describe my TT like 6?
I guess I really wanna take mine to the dealer to check it.
Here is the list of suspension mods i have now.
Bilstein B16 Damptronic
Rss front and rear sways(front the softest, rear the hardest, however I don't think the sways help on the steering feeling except feeling much better when I am in corners, stiffness of the steering feels the same before and after)
How would you guys describe your steering? 1-10? Did you guys do anything to the suspension to make it this stiff? or It came factory like this?
THx for the help again guys, everyone of you are being very very helpful.

Best,
I prefer heavier steering too which is why I now run with these (test3) settings:

Note the large positive front toe, and not a huge amount of front camber. A lot of tuners set front toe to be either 0 or toe out (minus) so that turn in is quicker. I have high positive toe as 1) I like heavier steering 2) I don't like fighting the steering wheel on rough terrain 3) as I have more power than the stock car on acceleration the wheels naturally toe out (go more neg) and so more power = more toe out on hard acceleration.
To reduce squatting (light steering on acceleration) you need to have Damptronics and lower the car, ensuring the rake is still about 1 degree nose down (my ride height settings give this).
Sway bars wont make any difference to steering feel as far as I am aware. You can increase/reduce grip on one end of the car by tightening/loosening the sways on the opposite end of the car, but that's about it. Note, if you stiffen the rear sway to give more front end grip and thus less understeer, you have to bear in mind that then the point where you lose grip is much more sudden ie. you have to correct much faster.

Hey Alan, how have you been! Long time!! I have similar feeling with my stock steering wheel. I know you already have TA but if all the alignment thing didn't work. Think about a smaller 340mm wheel. It tighten the steering feel alot, it work well with me!

I am looking for a place who can do a corner balance and a good alignment as well. Hope that fix my light steering problem. I will print out this chart to do exact alignment

I am thinking change mine to a small steering wheel too, I have to try yours again see how it feels!
Thx for the input! Might try this out as well.
Is it true that the factory multifunction steering wheel has a bigger diameter compared to the factory sport steering wheel? I drove my friend's 997C2S which has the sport steering wheel, feels like the steering is little stiffer, and the steering wheel feels smaller too, is it true? or it's just my wrong feeling? Even I have the TA thick multifunction wheel, still feel bigger then the factory sport one..
No idea. I have driven many Turbos with both sports and MF (the thicker version in my Turbo) wheels and I didn't notice any difference other than not having those thick parts above where you thumb goes.
Personally I don't like the Porsche sports steering wheel. I'd much prefer a Techart or even an Audi/Lambo sports steering wheel myself.
