Thankfully, here on the west coast, with so many porsches in our hosp parking lot, nobody even notices many cars. You pretty much have to be "asking" to get noticed to get any attention.

You bought a nice car. Enjoy it. You cant stop others from oogling. Be happy you own the object of others desire an d appreciation. Of course, there's a gray area re: somebody looking to steal your car. It sucks, but there's lost of criminals out there who take advantage of t the priveledged. Thats just how it is. Ask Alex Gong or Anna Loginova whether it was worth it.

Thats what car insurance is for.

I NEVER worry about my car. Seriously - if somebody steals it, fine - I've got great insurance and can replace FAR faster than I can undo the negative impact on my health caused by either

1) stress/worrying about a stupid material object

2) getting hurt trying to stop said grand theft porsche turbo.

So yeah, I think you're worrying too much.
Yup. This is pretty much how I look at it as well. So what if a couple of kids are taking pics or video or even peering into your car through the window. I think we've all done that with a cool looking car. Most people that peer into my car have nice things to say, such as that's a cool color interior (terracotta). If they start following you around that's another story.

you guys remember those autopager alarms they had back in the 80s-90s.

HILARIOUS!

"oh look - those three guys are about to jack my car, let me drop my taco and and go confront them - NAAHHT!."

guys,

make one thing clear, it is just a car that can be replaced...my bigger concern is not kids drooling over the car, and yes we probably all did it in our younger years

my opinion about being concerned about "bigger things" was the stimulus for this thread

maybe i over-reacted...but with the info in my head about our fellow member fresh, it raised my level of awareness

these cars are not commonplace here...at our hospitals and offices they are few and far between so they probably do "stick out" more than usual...fortunately we have awesome people at our hospitals and i have earned their respect so they may comment on my car but respect what it took to get it (after all they have witnessed first hand what it took to get it!)

i think we all need to have a higher level of awareness with how the world is now, and these cars that we enjoy only draw attention...sometimes attention that we dont want

There are a lot of nice cars in L.A. so a Porsche does not raise many eyebrows around here. That said, home invasions are becoming common place. Stories such as the stolen turbo certainly raises awareness but I also wonder if there is a back story that we don't know about.

You should expect a lot of attention when you own the car you own.

i was a bit annoyed, long day in the OR

as i walked towards them i said "are you gonna send me copies of what you are doing?'

they asked if it was my car and i said yes...then i asked that they stop what they were doing, they didnt, so i said "if you want to see one buy a magazine"

...thx

My thoughts on this topic...hmmm.. Well, for starters, I completely see where you're coming from. I don't believe we can be too safe these days. I sleep with a loaded revolver under my bed, and keep another loaded 9mm hidden elsewhere in the house just in case of a home invasion. I also keep a small cannister of pepper spray/tear gas/ UV dye in the center consoles of all my cars as well as "Defender" style flashlights. So, I completely understand wanting to be safe.

All that being said, I personally would not have chosen to say what you said to those teenagers. What they were doing is extremely common around my part of the country. Furthurmore, I am generally very gracious in those situations and actually offer to let them look at the engine, interior etc.. (assuming I have the time and all other factors indicate the situation is "safe")

A lot of people assume that Porsche owners are very arrogant and I try my best to dispel this image. If nothing else, I wouldn't want to **** off a bunch of teenagers who have nothing but time on their hands and who will definitely remember my car the next time they see it.

But, even in you own words, you were having a bit of a bad day so what you did is understandable and in all likelihood, not the way you typically would react. The most important thing is that you follow you instincts and that you are staying safe. Best of luck to you.

Dan

Here's my take on it all. If kids or whatever are taking pictures, there is nothing to worry about, we all loved cars when we were that age, and when we see someone who has a nice car...this generation has instant access to take pictures with their phones, no big deal. Im 21, and I consider myself very fortunate to have nice things. I drive a Porsche, I have 2 cars, and I have a great job. Im also a gear head! If i see another nice car, i cant help but check it out as well. Believe me....if anyone walks near my car, I immediately become wide-eyed. With people taking pictures, there is nothing to be paranoid...its not worth being mean over. When you were a kid and You saw, say....I dont now, a Ferrari Dino. And you were just loving it, the wost thing Is if the owner is mean to you and basically ruins the car for you. I was admiring a Vanquish parked at this resturant before I had my license, the owner came out and we chatted for 2-3 minutes, then he threw me the keys and said "here, take it around the block, Im just having lunch", more recently...This happened to me with a Ferrari California, and 612 Scag....Then again, I believe everyone feels differently about their cars, and if they do not respect the car, and your wishes, then you can do whatever. The OP kind of threw me off with the whole "if you want to see one get a magazine" thing, I mean thats kind of messed up. Then again I could be over-thinking it and missed more details that lead up to it. I wanted to punch this little kid (8 or 9 years old) and their parents after he put his foot on the hood of this parked LP560 in the parking lot, to tie his shoe. I mean, WTF! Its always good to be prepared for the worst in any circumstance, I realize once I leave the comfort zone of my hometown, then I will realize this more. I have been followed before, by a pretty fast car once at 2am....I couldnt lose him every time I tried, But then I could tell he wasnt from around my area, so I knew how to drive thru the twisty back roads and eventually lost him. It reminds me of this video....It always makes you more defensive.

I think I'm more disturbed by the number of guys carrying guns on this thread! j/k, it's your right down there. I try not to have the BEST car/house/whatever in the neighbourhood (and with my income that's EASY to do!) but I still use common sense and try not to attract too much attention. Yeah, it's "only" a 911 turbo but I still like getting the thumbs-up from a driver who appreciates a nice car. I'd be crushed if it were stolen, but the reality is that I'd prefer theft over something like murder or beating of a family member.

Hand doc, I don't think you're being paranoid. Perhaps becoming jaded, but I don't think that's unreasonable given the way society is progressing.
