Can any new owners post their impressions of using launch control on the new PDK turbo and turbo S? Where do you get to use it - on the street or the track? Any burnt clutch smell after using it? Does Porsche warranty unlimited use of it? I don't have one yet so just wondering.

 

Only have 200 miles on my Turbo S - have been advised to break the engine in before trying launch control...Don't know if that is hype or good advice but in the absence of better intel I think I will defer to caution. Will give my impressions as soon as I can though.

 

I've "tried" Launch Controlled my Turbo S Cab after 240 miles and failed. Problem is, it took me 4 tries. Reason is I have a Panamera Turbo and the PTT when you do LC, there is a yellow flag that appears in the instrument cluster and I was looking for it on the Turbo S too but failed to realize that the message is on the steering wheel. DOH!

 

I used it on the demo 997 Turbo PDK I drove several months ago. It works exactly as described. There is no clutch smell or any other side effects. A buddy and I found a clear stretch of road with no traffic and bam! The acceleration is mindbogglingly quick, the front end goes light, the car squirms and the steering gets a bit darty, the shifts are instant and in no time you are looking for the brakes.

The salesman insisted on showing me how to do it. I said I wasn't really interested but he said I MUST try it. There is no limit to how often it can be done. The truth is, you wouldn't do it every day - you need a lot of road for one thing!

The amazing thing is the car we drove had spent the whole day in the hands of the press getting the same treatment. It had 2,000km on the clock when I drove it. The very same car has been tested by magazines since doing 0-100km/h in 3.1 seconds.

 

Just tried it in a Turbo S... OMG!

It's like night and day compared to my old 997.1 TT

 

Had a run in with a Pontiac GTO. He asked to go on 3, let him go first because I reacted too late in releasing the brake while doing LC...WOW...the car takes off pretty violently. Amazing.

 

Exactly why I'd never buy a demo !!

Actually, the car drove so well I tried to buy it (for a discount of course) but was told it had many more press days in front of it before it would be sold. If you only keep it for a couple of years and can make a big saving, who cares if it is a demo?

 

That is what I'm thinking too, who cares? Who knows how many times it's been launched? Does that matter, does Porsche not build these cars to handle such supposed flogging?

The only thing I would be concerned with with a demo are the Over-Revs. And if a demo purchase was in my future it would be bought at a discount, substantial, and with a PPI too to check about the said Over-Revs.

It's not like these demo were part of some rental fleet. And yes they may have a number of miles on them but it's not like they are of some lower quality build like a Ford Focus from Mexico.

 

When I got my first 997 Turbo in 07 the dealer told me that the car came completely broken in. The engine was dynoed on a stand before installation into the car. The warranty stated that the first scheduled service was 2 years or 20K miles including oil.

The new Turbo S shows the first service at 10K and a recommended break in of 2000 miles... Don't rev it over 4500 RPM!

I guess there going backwards.

 

Owner's manuals in other parts of the world say 2000 km instead of 2000 miles? And 2008 and up 997.1TTs have service intervals at 10K miles...not only 2010s.

 

Then who is to be believed?

Wow...2000km for break in...I have never "broke" a car in properly. It's just too hard to resist not dropping the hammer.
