I'm considering to install a turbo timer to keep the engine running for few mins cool down period after switching off the car ?!?

The question is: is it recommended/healthy for the car and what happens if it fails to shut down and are failures common?

I would be interested too if fellow 6speeders have had positive experiences with such a solution.

My take on this was that when i drove off the lot, the SA said 30 seconds idle at start up and cool down. I idle for at least 30 seconds and no WOT until full warm up (shade under 200). I usually turn off without the cool down if I know my temp is below 200.

I used turbo timers on my Nissan TT's and had them set for 2 minute cool down. But with those cars I used to run 'em hard and put them up wet...as they say in the horse trade.

Now I live in a community where I have to drive 24mph for about 2 miles and figure that's enough cool down period. I still run the car for about 30 seconds when I pull into the garage because old habits die hard. Plus since I have been doing that I haven't seen any smoke on startup again.

This may be speculation but you guys would better know than I, The Audi cars have an Auxillary waterpump that runs once the car is off (and flows coolant in a reverse flow) to keep the turbochargers from overheating when "put away wet" ... do your cars have them? if they do no real need to have a turbo timer (my twin turbo has one). but most people can't drive theyre cars all out from A to B, usually some kind of slow driving right to the end..

I believe what RUF_turbo doing is the right and proper way to deal with cooling down or consider a turbo timer to keep the engine running for @ least two mins to avoid the smoke in startup and keep ur engine in good healthy condition

Agree - cool down by driving before parking is the way to go. BTW, only time I get smoke on start up is after a cold start, shutdown before warm up and then smoke on the second start cycle - for exampale when backing out of garage to wash the car and then starting up after car wash is done.

Think about this: Porsche has been dealing with this sort of problem since day 1 because of their air-cooled legacy. If anyone knows what is required to keep an engine healthy when it's hot it has to be Porsche. For this reason I don't think a turbo timer is necessary.

As others have pointed out it's best to let the motor warm-up a little before heavy exercise and then let it cool down a bit before turning it off.

I agree, most people in general do not follow directions and Porsche must have calculated this into the design and tolerance of their TT engines. I assume most people do not routinely cool down (to normal running temp of 185-200F) before shutting their engines off. If the engine and turbos were so sensitive to heat damage, we should be hearing of more turbo failures and engine rebuilds.

I drive around to get temps below 200, and shut off after 30 seconds of idling.
