997 GT2 Suspension Set-Up for the Track
997 GT2 Suspension Set-Up for the Track
I'm getting ready for the track and I was hoping for some suspension setup help...
My car has oem 19" wheels and RE-11 tires (235/305) and a stock suspension. It's pretty much a street car, but always spirited driven. What suspension setups would I want to consider ? or what are the basic suspension upgrades available for a 997 GT2 ?
The only mods on the car is an ecu upgrade, bmc filter, cat bypass, and clutch/lwfw and 996 cup cable shifters on the way. I will run either MPSC (245/325) or Nitto NT05 (245/335) for track. Did anyone tried the Nittos ?
I've searched the forum a lot but got confused actually and didnt actually find what would be the best setup for track.
Thanks.

Well it's all very much subjective...
First question is, what are you looking to do?
The suspension setup for your GT2 is great straight from Stuttgart! It also has ALOT to do with your driving style. When you drive do you experience alot of Understeer or Oversteer.
Here is a chart I found for both Over/Understeer characteristics.
Are you taking it to Bahrain or Abu Dhabi?

The suspension is great but there's always better ways to improve on it
My driving style as mentioned earlier is mainly spirited driving but the problem here is that we dont have a track as you know, I'll be driving it mainly in Bahrain.
Im mainly concerned for a more balanced out and more road feel of the car, first thing im doing is getting rid of all the rubber bushings as a start and maybe sway bars. But i want to know what alignment specs i should go for, camber, toe, etc.

Your GT2 allows you to adjust ride height, toe angle, camber and anti roll bars. Let's see what we can do....
I am assuming from your questions that you want more cornering stability as apposed to straight line stability correct? I don't know if this is necessarily the best option for you at this track. Look at those beautiful straights in the map below:
Ride height
Obviously you will be lowering this for Bahrain
Toe Angle
If you willing to sacrifice a little bit of stability on the straights and get sharper turn-in to the corners then have your set up with toe-out approach. If you want to rip past everybody and have the best stability at high speeds then you will go for more toe-in or leave it at stock to begin with
Camber
If you are going for maximum tire exposure to the track in a corner then you will definitely be looking for a negative camber.
A tried and proven method of properly adjusting for camber is to measure the temperature across the width of the tire as soon as you hit the pits after running some laps. As a rule of thumb, its best to have the inner edge of the tire slightly hotter than the outer. If you are achieving this scenario then you know you are on the right track! No pun intended
Anti-Roll Bar
I strongly suggest you leave these at stock for now...Look below at the setups I have suggested, from Mild(ish) to Wild!
I suggest you get some laps in. Rip the track and constantly adjust until you get the right feel.
Remember...
Cornering
Negative Camber
Toe Out
Straight Line (I suggest you leave stock for this)
Positive Camber
Toe In
I don't really want to give you a set-up before you actually get some track time, but this is a setup we did with a GT3.
Camber: -2,6 F; -2,2 R
Toe: 0mm in Front 5mm in Rear
Sway bars: 2 from full in the front, All Soft in the rear
A Really aggressive set-up we did which was crazy but was VERY STABLE once we got the hang of it was:
-3.2 in the front and -2.4 in rear,
Toe: 0mm toe in front and 5mm toe in rear

Agreed, GMG components are clearly superior to anything else out there right now.
With my turbo I have their WC spring/sways/toes/control arms/bushings, which is a solid setup on the track.
