Key replacement advice

My recently purchased used 2008 Turbo came with only one key. I would like a spare. I called a few local dealers and got the bad news - The blade, the key head(electronics) and the programing in total makes for about a $450 to $600 charge. The programing cost of $150 seems most outrageous. If anyone has some experience or advice on a Porsche replacement key, please let me know. Thanks.

Doug

Price is a touch high, my local dealers charge about $300-350.

You can potentially save a little money by buying a blade and remote yourself, cutting the blade yourself, buy you will need a PIWIS to program and code the key.

Regardless, it is expensive.

Suncoast sells the blank key plus the remote...I think its like $149 for the remote and $20 for the blank key...Then you're at the mercy of the dealer to program it...

I got my from Suncoast blank key plus the remote or you can get it from eBay as well. Had a local locksmith cut it for $20. Then took my car in for some other warranty issue & mention that my spare key is not working they checked it out and told me it lost programing. Warranty got it covered for me!

OFB: Are you an attorney? I'm not, but I've paid for many hours of work, so I feel like I'm qualified to say that's attorney thinking if I've ever seen it. Not a lie, not a big story, just the basic fact at hand: My key doesn't work. Brilliant!

We should start a log book of repair "techniques" like this.

I like a lot of things about my local dealer. They treat me very well and I don't mind paying extra for superior service. For example, I could pay less to have the snows put on at my local tire store, but then I wouldn't get the nice service my dealership provides (pickup/drop-off of snow tires/wheels). But $150 for "programming" is a hose job.

Can you just get and use the blank key? I have both factory keys, but they are huge and if I could just put the mechanical key on my key chain as a spare/just in case, that would be great.

I received a plastic blade from the dealer with the car - so the blanks must be available someplace.

A properly cut key blank will open the locks but without the transponder it won't start the car.
