2011 Turbo S Question
2011 Turbo S Question
6 speeders,
My Father-in-Law is looking to replace his '09 TT Cab with a '11 Turbo S Cab. He recently visited Champion, and learned the Turbo S is only offered in PDK. Is this correct? I imagine Yes, as Champion likely know their stuff...
- Are there any plans for the Turbo S to be offered in a manual transmission?
- It seems a bit strange, for the highest performance, non-'special edition' model to only have PDK, and I imagine it didnt go over well with some purists...
Thanks in advance for your help

I went to the dealer to order a 2011 c4s manual. Priced with options I was close to the turbo $ and went that way. Then after discussion that the Turbo was changing in 2012 and the S was not-I went with the S to have a fresh style longer.
The PDK switches gears faster than me and I can make a stick dance. I have attended Skip Barber stage 1 and 2 when I had my M3 in 1988. I competed and won racing in solo II when i was in a college student in Boston in an M3 (and owner a 200? Supra Turbo and in a 1985 300ZX over the years all stick) and once you know how-you don't forget. I love driving and spend alot of time getting good art it.
I always wanted a 911 and ordering this car is a childhood dream coming true! I had many 911 posters in the walls of my room and dorm at all times. I never though I would get an automatic 911. If you feel this way, drive a PDK. It is better and more precise that I ever was or could be. I do not plan to track the car but if I did, I think I would have an advantage over anyone driving the same car in a stick.
The gears hit so fast and solid up and down it is a dream gearbox. You can't mess up a shift up or down and the rev matching is incredible. Small issue-I went witht he paddle shifters and they rotate with the wheel as aposed to the Ferarri that are on the column. You need to get used to this as when the wheel is 180 degrees the paddles are reversed. I still went with the paddles over the buttons as I like the look and feel better.
I test drove teh Ferrari Califoornia and I also liked it but similarly equiped it was 250K and I felt that it was a more fragile car than the S. I can't explain it but I thought I would break it too easily if I "drove" it like I plan to drive the 911. Hard top vert got my attention big time. Car has great lines. Options are big $ and discounting is zip. The California has the fixed paddles and initially I liked those better-Time will tell. California is a good car for someone looking to cruse and enjoy the road with some spirit. The 911 is for for that and if you want to get serious about your driving, it can take all you can dish out up to serious track driving and still be a pleasure on the road. most of this is personal taste. I just did not think the Ferarri was right for me at this time in my life.
I would have argued all day that anyone buying an Automatic 911 is making a mistake unless it was for the wife's DD, but I was wrong-this is a serious tranny and deserves the respect for what it is-amazing German engineering. period. I don't expect to convince many but I hope you will at least drive it to see what I mean and then decide.

His desire for the 6sp isn't for performance, as everyone recognizes that the new PDK type trannys are much quicker, it is purely a driving experience thing. For his DD porsche, he has always had a manual. I think now, he is thinking about a new non-S turbo with some Champion parts (car will come new from Champion) to get the additional performance.
His wife drives a PDK C4S and he has a F1-f430, so he knows those transmissions well.
Does anyone know the release date for the 2012 Turbo's? I have seen pics for the 2012, so i assume it will be Aug of 11, but will the Turbo be available right away, or after a year?
Thanks
Mark

We have both. A 6 speed '08 Turbo & a '11 Turbo S PDK. While the PDK shifts faster etc., the fun factor still goes to the 6 speed. As far as release of the Turbo, it usually lags about 2 years. The 997 came out as a 2005 but the turbo didn't arrive until the 2007 model year.

Only PDK.
If he wants a manual he will have to go with the standard Turbo.
He might be able to raise the horsepower to Turbo S or greater levels without voiding warranty by a simple undetected ECU upgrade. I'm pretty sure the engines in the Turbo and Turbo S are identical.
I know in the BMW 335i (turbo) you can have a plug and play ECU box and if something goes wrong it's undetected and shows no errors in the car's computer at the dealer. Again, I don't know if this is the case with the 997.2 TT.
