Thumbs down my clutch is dying! help!

Merry X'mas everyone!!

I realize my clutch was acting a little bit weird last week and I didn't think too much. I thought I needed to change my pressure plate. Anyway, I went to porsche for oil change today and they said my clutch hydraulic system is leaking oil. They said if I want to get my new clutch done. Might as well change all the parts. Total after labour is $6500USD. What the hell!! The parts alone are $5000USD. Anyway, If I want Porsche Taiwan to do it. It's gonna take till Feb to order these parts from Germany. When I bought the car in summer, It's an 07 997TT US spec with 9.5k miles. Currently it has 13k miles. Does the clutch usually wear out this fast? Or the previous owner abused the car? or just manufacture error?

I am thinking to order from U.S and get it done somewhere else in Taiwan. The parts from states are 50% cheaper. But do I really need to change all the parts? Porsche didn't really exactly told me what is wrong but they just said the hydraulic system has oil leak. The disc is wearing out. Might as well change all these:

99711601352 Clutch disc
99611602751 Pressure plate
99951001502 SCKT SCREW X9
99711401251 Flywheel
95011608008 Release bearing
99611623752 Hydraulic system - Slave cylinder

I don't understand. Is the clutch slipping? "Leaking hydraulics" sounds like the slave/accumulator is failing, which does not need a clutch change.

Too many launches?? If you have to change the clutch, might as well put in a Sachs performacne clutch.

When I let go of the clutch in 1st gear. The car wasn't really moving until I let go of the clutch almost all the way. This happened 3 ~ 4 times in the past 2 weeks. Porsche dealer pretty much told me, some oil is leaking. That's about it. Somehow I feel they just want to make $ out of my wallet.

Describe the symptoms that you have that make you say "the clutch was acting a little bit weird last week'. If you have slipping while in gear, you probably have a clutch problem. If your clutch slave is leaking and/or you have a hard pedal while the car is not running, you have an accumulator/slave problem which doesn't need a clutch change. I'd get a second opinion from an independent shop. Unless you have a slipping clutch, sounds like the dealer is on a fishing expedition for your money. Good luck.

OCTurbo is infamous around these parts
i agree with the above posts. sounds like a bad clutch slave and accumulator. my clutch behaved similar to yours along with leaking of pentsoin fluid. new slave/accumulator fixed the problem. this should cost you no more than $1500 out the door.

Sounds like a slave cylinder/accumulator problem. It is very common in the 997tt. I had mine replaced under warranty twice. Yours should be covered under warranty..

I had my slave cylinder replaced under warranty.
i just had my clutch and pressure plate replaced with Sachs unit. Its the same set up Ruf uses. 17K on original, disk still looked good probably 60% but due to my eh...."updates" the pressure plate couldn't handle the horsepower gains Need to bed in the clutch so can't give much of report but the little I did step into it..awesome.Feel is the same as stock with just a slightly sharper release point. .

Forgot to mention, sometimes I find it hard to throw in 2nd gear. Especially the 3rd gear precisely. This happens sometimes and thought it is normal. ??

Porsche recommends that you change the slave and accumulator at the same time. Ask about updated parts numbers from a knowledgeable source such as Suncoast Porsche. They sell at discounted prices also. Good luck.

2nd to 3rd gear shifts can miss sometimes if hurried, especially under a lateral load while turning at track speed. Better to shift before or after the turn, rather than mid turn when going from 2nd to 3rd.
