Clear Side Markers and Traffic Stop

Exiting the interstate on Friday and needed to make right turn. Looked over and there was a blacked out Charger running parallel to me on the right side. Took about a second to realize it was DPS...thought he was just admiring the car since I was't doing anything to warrant a traffic stop. Anyway he let me move over into the right lane and about 15 seconds later he lit me up so I pulled over. "Good afternoon and then where is my front license plate and were those aftermarket lights on the side." I told him the plate wasn't attached but was in the trunk but he was more interested in the lights. Said I needed to have amber reflectors - I told him the lights were Porsche lights and that the bulb was amber and then I figured I just better shut up. He asked if I had been stopped for this before - I hadn't. Any way he asked for my license (but not insurance??) went back to his car and came back about 3 minutes later with a warning (no penalties assessed) ticket for no amber reflectors and no front plate. First time stopped in Texas and thought it was strange that the warning isn't even a "fixit" ticket + he was more interested in the lights than no plate. I'm sure I'm in some central data base now so not sure what happens if I'm stopped again.

Don't worry about it. He had nothing to bust you with so you're good. Good thing you didn't downshift to get in front of him.

Never heard of that one. I've always had clear sides and its never been an issue. Think he was trying to find a reason after pulling you over? I hear there are plenty of bank robbers to chase in Texas rather than pulling over Porsche's.

Arrow Unfortunately...

...some Texas DPS Troopers and other law enforcement don't know what's what on some cars.

Also, some are bored & will pick on almost anything. Good thing your car's not red in color.

I had a cop stop me to ask me where i got the clear lens'. i told him it was the best $40 mod in the world. he said he had a 996 and was psyched to get them. we talked about 15 minutes on my wheels and the 997. so funny.

That makes absolutely no sense. It doesn't matter what color the lenses are during daylight hours - neither will "reflect" when the sun's out. At night the amber bulbs make the lights appear the same as they would be if the lenses were amber.

I'm thinking the cop didn't like your car..

it is the law, crazy as it may seem. there has to be visible amber up front and red in the back from a side view. The rear lamps can count in the rear if they wrap around enough.

Does it have to be a reflector up front or just an amber bulb? Even the OEM amber light isn't a reflector, just amber colored plastic.

I think cops sometimes will pull cars over just to check it out. Doesn't the law require that they need a reason to pull someone over? The no front license plate and tinted front windows were used on me many times. I am cool with the car talk as ling as I don't get a ticket.

No central database - lived here in Texas my whole life and I always say it is the first time if I get stopped for a non-moving violation (like no front plate). Since it was just a warning, he didn't have to look up any laws he claimed you were breaking - technically he could have made up anything he wanted. Heck, could have given you a warning for your belt not matching your shoes...

Oh, and I have never been stopped for clear side markers and I have had them on over a dozen cars over the years.

Been stopped a half-dozen times for the lack of a front plate (have never installed one on any car), but never received a ticket, only a warning. Every time I was stopped for the license plate was by a Dept of Public Safety state trooper and it was always in the middle of the night. They simply use it as an excuse to see if you are drinking and driving, IMHO. It's that pattern that has caused me to get one of the tow hook license plates, now whenever I am out late at night I spin that sucker on the front!

I think you just got unlucky with that particular officer. Every where I go I see ricer's by the dozens running clear lens on the entire car and I have yet to hear of one being pulled over for it.
