Can you track a TIP?
I have been tracking my 997 TT for three years with about 10-15 track days a year.
No problems, issues.. Its really a blast.. My car has had modifications, new intercoolers, exhaust, suspension, and new tune.. ~550+hp at the rear wheels.
No error codes just ripen fast fun.. The trans is quite intelligent with an occasional downshift that I force in to it..
Keep in mind this car was built for it!!

Tip is fast enough that instructors always asking you to slow down. Tip is fast enough to pass lighted modded 6 speeds on the straights. Agree with all comments on tranny and always run in sport mode. Easier to run tip in drive but all it takes is a bit of traffic in the twisties and your off the pipe. Run in manual and you have better control to keep on pipe in the twisties and in right gear all the time, but you lose a bit on the straight where drive mode obviously shifts better than you can in manual.
With love and respect to ALL 6speed turbos, I think they would have a tough time keeping up with a TIP. They say the tip tranny can hold up to ~600awhp, and with a tuned TCU.. the shifts are VERY responsive, much quicker, and way more fun... AND THEN PORSCHE RELEASED THE PDK......

I am looking for buy me next Porsche and cant decide which one to take, tiptronics are in europe littlebit cheaper, but I have quite used with manual.
The answer is based on the capability of the driver. For literally 99% of the 911TT owners who track their car the answer will be the tip (and now the PDK). The truth is that we are ALL non-professional drivers and we might miss a shift or even blow a shift once a lap (or more hahaha). All it takes is that one missed shift in a 6 speed and your done - the tip can NEVER miss a shift. If you are that extremely competent race car driver in that rare 1% then maybe you will be faster in a 6 speed. That being said the modern trannies (ie. PDK for the 911) blow away the old torque converter tip slushboxes.
Tip is acceptable for medium drives. More than that you will miss the short gear ratio of the 6sp and the ability for engine brake for late brakes. Tip only downshift to medium rpm and the car may enter loose into turns if you brake hard and turn agressive. And the longer your session time on track and the more heat you put into the gearbox, the downshifts rpm range will drop more and more.
With 6sp the fun was even higher...
Don't get me wrong. I love tip but for track, even being capable to set pretty fast times for a street car, it isn't capable to take advantage of the full potencial of the car.

I hear that pdk also has conservative downshifts to protect gearbox. There nothing like manual or race type sequential gearbox that allows you have full control on engine rpms.
