I'm 95% sure they are SAE threads, not metric due to US regs. Be careful they are very easy to crossthread.

 

You make a good point. When I changed my last car's seat belts to yellow and stripped the bolt head, I replaced it with an OEM one - I had always assumed (probably incorrectly) metric.

 

When I put a rollbar in a 996 (pia), one of the seatbelt bolts crossthreaded and it surely was SAE, I'm sure the 997s are the same.

Your experiment is a first. Congrats if it has lived up to expectations. Does the car feel any different other than the interior sound?

 

Correct, they are 7/16 fine thread, not metric. The one standard bolt in the car. I can't remember the reason, but believe again, due to regulations in the US of some sort.

 

If you do the conversion you will find the they are almost identical in diameter and pitch. That is why you can use SAE or Metric bolts (although hard to find in that size).
