They're also replacing TPM sensors and coils under warranty. I'm on the hook for the major service itself i.e., plugs, filters, oil change, etc. Plus they say I'm due for rear tires which I will milk a while longer.

I'll report back on the outcome...
Great news! Please report what the "fix" is.

Hi All,

OK, here's the exact text from the paperwork:

"Performed WM287315 adjusting distance from pulse sender to sensor wheel. Removed trans and adjust (sic) sensor to 1.2mm."

As noted earlier they also did the plugs, coil packs and TPM sensors plus of course the standard oil & filter service. This was Rusnak Porsche Westlake (Thousand Oaks, CA).

If you are a PCA member don't forget to mention it when doing business with a dealer: 10% off. I almost forgot as I've always used independent shops for my other Porsches. The discount is for real, $151 off this bill.

I found a PDF copy (English) of the TSB on a German forum but am waiting for my account there to be approved so I can access and share it here.

For what it's worth I had the pulse sender adjustment done to my car by the local dealer, the issue went away for 1 month or so and eventually came back. Hope you'll have better luck with it.

Thanks! Though which begs the questions ... would the transmission need to come off before this can be done?? Or someone has figured out to get this done without dropping the tranny....

holy crap.
for two days now, on a cold start, the car cranks dead on the first attempt. i dont know if thats the right way of explaining it, but it doesnt start the first time.

the battery is good, because on the second attempt it fires right up.

Hey guys, does anyone know how much labor/time is involved in doing this sensor fix?

I've been "bumping" the starter without fully starting it a couple of times and it hasn't gone above 2000 rpm the last few times. It seems to have helped.

Well, since having the "fix" performed my car has done the spiking rev thing at least 3 times. One was this morning. I'm not convinced Porsche really has a handle on the solution.

ouch, that stinks!

I just got quoted approx. $3500 for the job. Would hate to pay for it and not have it cure the problem.

I am monitoring the situation because it happens to me once in a while. If you had yours adjusted and it came back, maybe the sensor is bad. When I do get around to mine, I will have the sensor replaced.

Another Workaround?? Here is my latest ...... As noted I have been having a few annoying and possibly related issues, namely the engine cranks dead every second or third engine start, revs flaring, and rev range 1-6 events being logged at engine start/ignition (and no I don't miss downshifts).
What I found is that the clutch pedal switch (or ECU?) was doing something a bit strange. It "appears" to work fine, however the "ground" pin on the starter relay was not being grounded consistently. The starter relay ground (for the coil) goes to the clutch switch (or possibly ECU?), and when the engine fails to start, the ground pin goes open circuit, even with the clutch depressed.

So, as a workaround I have earthed the "ground" pin on the starter relay, bypassing the nanny state requirement to depress the clutch to start the car.

After a couple of days testing, the car cranks on every start and hasn't gone dead - so far so good. I haven't noticed any engine rev flare at start. Will see if the "rev range" events stop as well. Time will tell.

So what has been done to date:
1. Porsche set the crank angle sensor (didn't fix the rev range issue, or anything really).
2. Check cabling to starter etc - all good. no corrosion.
3. grounded starter relay

Legal Notice: Do not do this mod if you don't know how to start a car with the gearbox in neutral (or pressing the clutch). I accept no legal or other responsibility if you drive over a cliff of multi-storey carpark when starting in gear.
