Tracking a 997.1 TT
Tracking a 997.1 TT
I'm pretty close to my TT and I will most likely buy one this weekend. Part of the reason I sold my M5 was because I wanted to get back into DE events as I did when I lived in FL. I did a search under "track" and "tracking" and didn't see many relavent threads. Alsom tried "DE" and that didn't work.
Basically, out of the box, how does a 997.1 TT perform at the track? Is it a must to upgrade the springs/suspension or can I get to know the car on the stock setup? Am I better off going with a NA car? During my test drives the TT didn't seem as connected due to the assisted steering/clutch, however the power is INSANE......
I really want a TT for both street (not DD use) and for the track. Is the TT the right car? I remember in FL at my DE events (Chin, NASA and PBMC) most Porsche's were Carrera's C2/C2S and don't recall TTs.
Thoughts....... thank you.

Although the car is a tad heavy, its an ideal car for what you're asking. Although we have an EVOMS EVT775 and Brembo GT kit the car does amazing on the track. We will be doing a set of JRZ suspension eventually, but we ran the car up at a PCA DE event on street tires (PS2) and a set of Eibach springs.

You (and I) will run out of talent long before we run out of car. That said, for a few $K (plus adequate driving skills) you can turn a TT into a track-capable vehicle that will run with almost anything in a DE environment without having to offer up any excuses. Better yet, you can drive it from NJ to California, track it, and drive it home with complete confidence and comfort. I'm doing a 2,500 mile road trip to Road America for a DE next weekend. You wouldn't consider doing that with too many super cars........
PS Since I don't know what your talent level is, or whether you last name is "Long", please disregard my opening statement. My error.......

The stock 997.1 is very capable, but experienced track drivers may find a bit of the oscillation syndrome that occurs - front end is light and pushes, then throttle causes snap-oversteer. A very simple an inexpensive fix as Chris mentioned above is to get the car aligned to something near the GT3 street alignment -1.2 camber front, -1.6 camber rear. This is negligible increase in tire wear on the street with a big boost in front end grip on the track. However most cars will not achieve more than -1.0 camber in the front without lowered springs, camber plates, or shims.
The next step I have found to be somewhat magical is to put more meat on the front - I run 18" wheels on the track with 245 rubber on the front (R6's) which make the 997.1 a very formidable track animal.

Thank you for your reponses and I appreciate the feedback. Sounds like with just a little work a TT will be great at the track. I am a solo qualified driver (sebring and homestead) but have not done the tracks around here. I do know have a car behaves on the track, however, I have never driven an AWD car with as much power as the mighty 911. Up early, going for a run, and then car shopping........oh I hear the wife, not good. she thinks I'm getting a used Carreras S for around 65K :-)
Excellent
there are many great tracks around here; Watkins, pocono, limerick, new jersey motorsports park, etc
might wanna ck out the local pca but there are several other car clubs such as PDA
feel free to pm me for the skinny

Between Champion Motorsports and some JWE...I love my TT for: DE, tracking, and DD (kind of?)...last year I was able to turn a 1:41 at Laguna with street tires (Pirelli PZero Rosso)...hoping to break into 1:39 with Hoosiers R6's this year if I ever hit good weather...
Turbos can be a great do it all car if done right and if you remember its a street legal car, not a track build purpose car.

In my weak 5 minute search to quantify my unintentional spreading of a rumor... I found out that they did file for bankruptcy (in and of itself isn't the end of the world), but what was stated over and over again, is that nothing will be affected in the 2011 season.
Future is uncertain. Apparently same people own VIR as well, and I don't see that place going anywhere. I know that a few other tracks have gone bankrupt, and have survived, only to turn around.
I hope that no place shuts down due to finances (unless mismanaged), because this could affect a lot of us (our hobby as a whole).

From what I've read (just some basic 'net sleuthing), NJMP filed bankruptcy to restructure their debt obligations, freeing up cash flow from debt service to be allocated instead to funding necessary operational support.
One would think, at a minimum, once the significant "sunk-cost" investments have been made (ground-breaking, architecture/layout, buildings/pavement surface/etc - the facility won't simply fold up shop anytime soon. Would be a waste of valuable assets. I'd expect (again, at a minimum), an outside operator would likely buy up the assets post-bankruptcy (not the debt) for cents on the dollar, and then reopen under new management. Just a guess, however - we'll see how it plays out in the coming months/years.
