Thumbs up Questions before buying a 997 turbo

Hi guys, I'm new here and I need your input.

I live in Canada and I'm really interested in buying a '07 or '08 Porsche 911 Turbo (997). It seems that you guys in the states have good availability and deals on them and since the Canadian dollar value is good I think it's the right time for me.

What I need to know (I did used the search engine):

1- How long these engines last in terms of milage, I see a lot of them with 35-40 000 miles. Is that a lot?

2- Is there anything special to verify on these cars before buying? like boost pressure or something else?

3- What would be a fair price for a '07 997 Turbo with all the goodies and 35 000 miles?

Thanks a lot!

Welcome to the forum!

To answer you questions:
1- the 997.1 turbos have the Metzger engine. It is one of the most reliable and bullet proof engines out there. 35 to 40 k miles and the engine is just starting out it's life!

2- Get a DME read out to check the over revs. Get a CPO if you can, if not, then at least a good PPI by someone who knows what they're doing.

3- should be about 80-90 k US depending on the options and cleanliness.

Good luck with the hunt!

The DME is the car's computer. Getting a readout of that will allow you to see the number of ignitions in ranges 1 through 6. Once you have those, post them here on the forum and we will be able to tell you if the car was abused in terms of over-revs.

CPO is Porsche's Certified Pre-Owned program when a used car is inspected by a Porsche dealer and if found acceptable, the work that it needs is normally performed and an extended warranty is then offered by the dealer. This is the best way to buy a used Porsche but it commands a premium.

PPI is a Pre-Purchase Inspection. It is not as thorough as a CPO'ed car but is the minimum you should do when buying a used Porsche. It will hopefully draw your attention to any major problems with the car.

Hope this helps.

Best of luck.

Karim

Carlito,

If you are looking for a Tiptronic Certified Porsche 997 I got one for you. As I understand, unlike BMW's CPO program, Porsche Canada recognizes the USA Certification. I have 10k miles on my baby and something you don't find on most cars: ceramic brakes. Let me know if I can help you with this sale.

Keep in mind that the spark plugs/coils may need to be changed. There is a major service scheduled at 40,000 miles, but generally the plugs should be changed in the 20,000 to 30,000 mile range. Check whether they have been changed, if not be prepared ... it's an expensive exercise too, in the $1000 to $1300 range

Good info - you're more patient than most - "search" would have been a convenient response. BTW, Mr. Mezger wouldn't like the "t" you added to his name.

You're absolutely right of course...

I was just thinking the other day that the poor fellow must have one of the most misspelt names in the world! Sure enough, a couple of days later I add to his misfortune!
