PDK owners...please help me understand!!

Hi all,

I have been looking at some PDKs (TT or TTS) but would like to ask some PDK owners some questions. Before I do, let me tell you a brief summary about myself.

I used to be an extreme HP junkie and had my share of fast cars (9sec SPI 900+ HP GTR, bolt on DLM TT Gallardo, etc.) but now that I am growing older with a kid on the way, I am finding myself deviating away from street racing and spending $$$ on mods. So I am looking to get into something fast out of the box, comfortable, AWD, and can be made faster with minimal mods and not a lot of cash. This is where the PDK comes in. BUT......my questions to you PDK owners are:

1) What type of mods have you put on your car, and has the tranny/engine been OK so far?

2) I understand that these trannys have their limitations at 550 awhp. My question is...at exactly that power level (550 whp) will the tranny be totally safe? Or is that the fine line between safety and disaster? I don't want to be on that fine line.

3) Whatever that AWHP may be that DOESN'T put you on that fine line of a tranny/engine failure, what do you think the PDK will go in from 60-130? Trap speed?

4) Do you regret going PDK now that it has been made evident that these motors are indeed weaker than the 997.1?

Thanks for any input in advance.

P.S - Thanks to Neil @ SPI and Tom @ Champion for answering some of my questions via PM. But I would like to also hear from real world owners.

I only have 2,500 km on mine so far. It's fast enough as it is so I have no plans for modding. It's comfortable too. But limited rear seat space can make it uncomfortable for any one with long legs sitting in the back.

It's the trap speeds / 60-130 I am looking for, not so much the ET.

I am hoping some PDK owners are able to answer my questions.

Thanks for the replies.

All your info is right here if you want to see what the car can do...As far as what is safe and what is pushing the fine line, I can't help you on that...I'm guessing you'll have to take the tuners word on that...

Thanks, Skeeter.

I already looked at that list and I saw k-ddsl's time of 60-130 in 7.2 secs, which is very impressive. I wonder if that was bone stock?

It looks like to get the PDK to go 130 in the 1/4 and/or get in the 6s 60-130 might be a stretch on the stock motor / tranny in a RELIABLE fashion!?

Kddsl did put a softronic tune on his car before he got rid of it...Not sure if this was taken before or after the tune...

From what I remember Champion had a Highly modded PDK.
It made significantly more HP.
They had to limit the HP to low 500's because of the clutchs slipping
Still didnt ET/MPH better than 10.7
Worked on an upgraded PDK gearbox, never completed....?

So until an upgraded PD trans is available, your ET will be limited to 10.7. Which since it is consistant, should be enough to take down faster cars from a dig.

For now with no PDK upgrade available. You can build a TIP with a Whiteknight/ESmotor trans upgrade, Proto 30R package on E85 and mid 9's should be more than possible.

All I can tell you is this car is fast and reliable out of the box. PDK is great. You have choice of what to drive, a comfortable lux cruser or a rapid fire F! shifting monster, all by agjusting the stock settings.

To me, I would not mod this car unless it was my track toy because for me it is fast enough as is and I do not want to deal with chasing down issues. I have modded cars in the past, all by reputable shops and with top notch dear. There are always issues.

In either car, unless you have the desire and wish to spend more the Vyreon is the only faster out of the box car I know.

I have a modded Champion PDK which sits at ~550 WHP and same TQ. My best time is 0-60 2.5 sec and 0-100 6.0 sec. It is well within the limits of the PDK. As a matter of fact you cannot damage the PDK as it senses too much power and shuts down immediately. You can put 700 hp on it and you will only be able to use ~ 565 WHP. Unofficially I ran 10.3 sec in the 1/4 with a mid to upper 130 trap. 60-130 is not good. I am still playing with it trying to improve #'s but the car is definetely wicked quick and smooth. BTW: Tires are the trick to corral low ET's.

Tip,

Can you share with me some more info regarding your set-up?

- Do you have a TT or TTS?
- What mods do you have exactly?
- How long have you had the mods on the car?
- Are you a spirited driver or do you only go WOT here and there?
- Have you ever had any issues at all? (even minor ones)
- Cost for this package?

If you would like to PM me, that's fine too. This is the type of info I am looking for that will make my decision easier. Thanks a lot.

Thanks JSF and Spoolin for your comments.

Great posts. Slow911TT68Tip can you explain this a bit more "As a matter of fact you cannot damage the PDK as it senses too much power and shuts down immediately. You can put 700 hp on it and you will only be able to use ~ 565 WHP."

Thank you.

Tom from Champion also stated the same thing. He said to me via PM...

"The way the PDK control unit works, (the PDK brain if you will), it's constantly monitoring TQ output through the transmission, so if it ever senses too much, it will always reduce power to protect the trans. You could put a full 800 HP kit on the car, but the control unit will always limit you to what it safe"

But this is very confusing to me. If you can throw 800 HP at a 2010 PDK and the PDK "brain" only transmits 550 whp through the tranny, then how can the PDK ever slip???
