Instrument Cluster Rattle
Instrument Cluster Rattle
My Turbo S, after 200-something awesome miles, seems to be exhibiting a high pitched loud buzzy rattle from behind the gauge cluster. If I push on the edge of the left side gauges (like the speedo or oil temp) it seems to go away. Has anyone else had/fixed this issue?
This is a typical 997 problem. Some cars get it some don't. Your Porsche tech should know the fix to this as there is now a spare part for this problem if you could call it that. The part is just a piece of tape with felt on one side. The dash binnacle is removed and the tape is stuck on the underside area that can rub up on the steering column shroud. I had it happen on my last 997s.
Resurrecting an old thread. Is the cluster removal DIY? Anyone done a writeup? I've seen a pic of one out, seems like they are fairly easy to remove. I have a similar rattle and it's like there is loose change back there.

Thanks! I had sport mode on last night and was cruising (playing
) along and hit a little bump in the road...obviously felt it something awful in sport - but - the binnacle started rattling! How timely!Rich
You need to be a member, but there is a DIY here...

As I've done the procedure before, here are a few things to note:
1. It can be very tough pulling out the plastic trim pictured here. I recommend covering the steering column and the leather dash with blue painters tape to prevent scratching.

2. To pull out the speedometer itself, it can be very difficult as the speedclips on the back are pretty tight. If you use a pry bar, you will scratch the leather. I recommend using these:

And applying them to the gauge face to pull the instrument cluster back.

Thanks, very nice of you to post that. Interesting that it only refers to the earlier models and not the turbo. I fully expect it is the same issue though. While the DIY seems pretty straightforward, I will be to let a dealer take car of it. I trust they will be able to pull it and add some tape!
