Though the outgoing 911 Turbo already provided blistering acceleration along with respectable fuel economy, a new report suggests Porsche will seek to up the ante with a tri-turbo system that will boost the overall power, low-end response and efficiency of the new 991-series model. A set of patent applications filed by the Stuttgart-based sports car maker have revealed its intentions to use three turbochargers for the upcoming 911 Turbo, Autocar reports. Similar in concept to the system devised by BMW for the brand’s diesel-powered M Performance models, Porsche ’s tri-turbo setup will employ one smaller unit to boost low-end response (and help eliminate turbo lag) together with two larger ones similar to the Borg Warner units used in the outgoing model.Expect output to jump from the 500 horsepower of the current twin-turbo configuration to somewhere in the 530-to-550 horsepower range, while fuel economy should also see a modest increase from the 25 highway mpg of the outgoing model. The engine itself will be an evolution of the current 3.8-liter flat-six.Look for more details on the powertrain, which will also be used in the new-generation GT2, closer to the new 911 Turbo’s introduction early next year.

I don't know Dave...more components = greater failure risk, greater number of things that could go wrong - more difficulty tuning? More "safety measures" to prevent tuning?

Can any tuners speculate on tuneabilty with 3 turbos? I have read that hp is speculated to be 530, 550 and maybe even closer to 600. Sounds like a beast from the factory. Maybe this is Porsche's further attempt to get a bit of the monies that that the tuners get and also make it more difficult to extract more power by outside hands.
