Cautions in buying a 997 Turbo?

Hey folks,

Took a 09 Turbo out today, pretty sweet car.

What are some cautions I should look out for in buying this car? Any known issues?

I've only been researching NA 997.

Thanks!

Incredibly strong cars and overbuilt engines. Nothing specific to an 09 TT that needs to be checked out, over and above the regular "used car" homework. Once you learn about the Mezter (GT1) engine in the 07-09 turbos, you won't accept anything else.

As with any used 911, be confident in your purchase by first checking the "big 3" --
1. Pre Purchase inspection (pay to have this done)
2. DME (scan to see if there are any serious over-revs, should be part of the PPI you pay for)
3. the obvious carfax history report for any repaired damage
...and for bonus ask to see a copy of all maintenance receipts (how often the oil was changed, etc)

Have fun with the purchase process. PM me with any questions (did an enormous amount of research before purchasing). They are great cars.

Thanks for the input on the engines, I had seen a similar reference to the TT engine in the regular 997 section. The rep also mentioned that the TT are different cars in that they are built stronger than the regular 997 - don't yet know if this is true apart from the engine. I may take you up on the PMs. I drove a 09 C2S PDK, 08 C4S 6spd and 09 TT 6 spd today. The only way I can get into the 09 TT is if I trade my Acura, but I think I'll need two cars. So gotta put a bit more thought into the TT purchase. It was really a fun drive, the power...wow..from 100km/h-150km/h effortless and quick to get there.

Is the car a CPO? If so, you've got nothing to worry.

It is CPO, the rep actually suggested doing the DME scan especially because its a TT, he said you definitely don't want over revs on this. I was planning on getting a DME record on any car, was surprised to hear him bring it up.

No reason to be surprised he brought it up. It needs to be run to have the car cpo'd. And it won't be cpo'd if it has over revs above a certain range.

Ok, interesting. I suppose I just assumed with all the recommendations out there to get DME on CPO'd...meant that CPO didn't take that into account. But it makes sense that they would because I've also read on here that over revs at certain range take engine out of warranty for some things or something like that. Unless its also worthwhile to take a look at DME to further scrutinize beyond CPO standards.

I suppose I need to get a checklist of the CPO inspection, does the dealer normally give this to you?

I also drove a CPO 08 C4S with a cracked windshield 10-12cm ...to be replaced by dealer of course.

I'd still ask for a pre-delivery DME readout to attach to your CPO warranty info. Makes it pretty clear that both you and dealer were aware of over revs, if any, at time or purchase. CPO warranty comes with a couple of folders, one of which has a copy of the completed checklist.

You can still hit the rev limiter with the tip. You just cant miss a shift.

Make sure you get a CPO car or an extended warranty. The Mezger engine is not as bulletproof as it has been made out to be. I had to have a camshaft replaced, and luckily it was still under the original warranty. That forced my hand to buy the extended warranty.

It is CPO. What would that repair have cost?

Seeing the dme prior to purchase is a must. If someone made an error and your cpo'd 911 had over revs, you old have a huge headache if warranty work ones up. They would be wrong but you would now have to discuss and argue.
