Oil leak found during PPI

Hi guys,

I've been lurking here for a while, learning as much as I can. I am in the market for an 07-08 997TT and the information on this forum has been great. I come from the BMW side, having enjoyed a few M3s over the years.

I have found what seemed like a great car, an 07 with about 19k miles, good price, looked in great shape. Unfortunately, the PPI uncovered an engine oil leak. The mechanic (an extremely thorough guy) said that it's hard to tell what it is, could be something easy to fix, but also a costly repair. It could also be something that I need to live with. I'm not sure I could, I realize it's a used car and expected a certain amount of small issues, but an oil leak seems like a big deal to me. It also seems to be quite uncommon for these cars.

Any thoughts? I'd appreciate any advice on this.

Thanks!

First thing I would do is talk to the seller. Are they willing to repair? If not and you really want the car, I would strongly suggest you try to pinpoint the cause. If mechanic cannot tell and needs to start digging to find leak and seller not helping, I personally would pass.

Which dealer did you go to? Have them pull off the rear bumper for a better look.

I actually took it to an independent shop, since it has a good reputation for thoroughness. The PPI was a full day affair... They could not take the bumper off without the owner's OK.

In the meantime, I spoke to the seller. I think he understands that it'll be hard to sell the car like this (to me, or any other buyer), so he'll have the shop that did the inspection look into the leak and solve it or at least find the source. We'll see how that goes...
