New tires for 997.1 turbo
New tires for 997.1 turbo
I was just on tire rack looking into a new set of tires for the turbo. I stumbled upon some new options for the car. I had not heard about the ADVAN Neova AD08 tires from yokohama. How are they for the 997 turbo? I drive pretty hard and like a nice connected feel to the road. My current v12 evos were great for the first few thousand miles but have lost their edge over time. Will mounting the ADVAN Neova AD08's be bad for the car at all since they are not oem? This will be my second set of non oem tires for my car and I always laugh when people warn me that I should only replace with factory spec. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. My car is a 2009 997 turbo cabriolet with steel brakes and 19inch standard turbo rims.
I don't know how it translates to a 911 but I had the ad08 on my s2000 and thought they had terrific grip, good hydroplane resistance and I don't think they were loud but then the roof was always back. I can't speak to their longevity since I sold the car after about 5k with them on. IMO you won't go wrong with that tire
AD08 Neovas are excellent tires, but haven't tried them on the Turbo yet. I was just looking at them last night as a replacement.
I'm currently deciding between the RE-11 (which I really liked), the AD08, and the Super Sports (lower performance class, but better longevity).
My Turbo is for the street so I'm leaning towards PSS at the moment, but if I planned on any mixed track duty, I'd go for the AD08s or RE-11s. The RE-11s tended to get loud as they aged because of the big block patterns.

I've had good experiences with Yokohama tires before -- though not the specific model you're looking at. They seem to be an upper tier brand. However, since they're not much cheaper than the Michelins, there just hasn't been a good reason for me to consider them on my P-car.

I have heard they are too. But not really comfortable for every day street tires. I do a lot of back road runs and some spirited highway stretches. But these will also be driven around town and on less exciting drives. I was hoping the yokohamas would be a good mix between the r888's and oem street tires?

I've had multiple sets for my other car and my experience with R888s is that they are indeed overkill for the street. At the temps you run them at on the street, they offer no more grip than the AD08 or RE-11. I'm guessing someone will chime in about how they run them really hard on the canyons, but to reach the 190F operating temp of the R888s on the street would take some seriously bonkers driving.
On the track, they seem to be around a second faster per mile (track length). At full depth they are pretty good at bailing water, but it's definitely not as good as RE-11s or AD08s.
They also fall off on grip after a year, not that they'd last a year on the Turbos.
Unless you track the car frequently but only have one set of tires for dual duty, I would go for one the other choices.

The best pure perf. tire I had on the turbo was the RE-11. This was in comparison to the PS2, PSS, and RE050A. I'm not near the car now, but I think the track car has the yokohoma mentioned as it's rain tire. Haven't used it yet so can't comment on how good they are.
I think the PSS was the best all around tire. For street driving i think they are great.
Yes, some are very vocal about using only N-spec tires. I don't care how "spirited" your street driving is. It will NEVER come close to what you are doing on a race track. You just can't push the car that hard.

Yes the R-888's are a little harsh for DD but it's a awesome tire for racing, you have to make a decision.Your NOT going to find a tire that performes when you need it then when you hit a bump in the road expect not to feal it.
