Anyone here has been to Stuttgart Porsche Museum? Worth it? Advice?
My family is visiting Germany for a couple of weeks this summer. This is a family vacation, so outside of renting a BMW (
no flame guys) I am not planning any car related activity, like visiting the Nurburgring or anything like that.
But... I am considering an afternoon in Stuttgart to visit the Porsche museum. Advice/comment anyone? No need for ticket or reservation right in advance right, just show up the day of visit? http://www.porsche.com/international...isitorservice/

Hello Can,
I have been there 2 times, definately worth it. There some really nice old cars.
(Modydick, 917, GT1, 959...)
You don't need any reservation, you just buy ticket at the entrance and go in.
There are 2 accessorie shops there, one is inside, the other one is a Porsche design shop which is just outside the museum.
You can buy nice clothes and accessories there.
Also dont forget to look at the calendar in Porsche museum website, sometimes its closed because of national holidays. Its also closed on Monday's.
Cheers,
Emre

I was there in August. It was very cool. Due to the immenent release of the 991 and the press secrecy we were only able to get a tour of the engine shop, but it was still very cool. Eat at Christophorus while you are there. It was outstanding.

Agree on the restaurant located inside the museum. It's very good. Last time I was there I had a retired porsche exec. take me on a private tour of the museum. Very cool.
Not to confuse you but the Mercedes museum is REALLY good, also in Stuttgart.

+10000 We were there, too. I actually enjoyed it more than the Porsche museum.

yeah, i'd say it's better. Didn't want to burst Can's bubble LOL. Especially if you have a family or non-car people with you. It's really cool how the corresponding history of that particular time are on display.
^^^Grin. Chris, during our travels I am frequently on thin ice with my otherwise very tolerant wife from the shenanigans I pull related to my photography hobby already ("golden hours" for photography are right around dinner time for example LOL). Replacing Rhine River tour with Mercedes Museum is going to be frowned upon I think.
Thanks (everyone) for the comments. I am nutty about my baby Turbo but don't know Porsche historic cars that well. Any must-see cars, like the ones Emre listed? Pls feel free to list here.

Can, the porsche museum is not very big so no need to just look for certain cars. you can get thru the whole place pretty quickly.
Where else are you headed in Germany? I love Germany, particularly Bavaria, and try to go whenever I can.

Thanks Chris. My itinerary, for about 16 days:
Munich with side trips to Dachau and southern part of Romantic Road, Neuschwanstein.
Prague
Berlin
Rothenburg with side trips to Rhine River cruise
Regensburg
I've been to Europe a number of times but this is first time in Germany; I am excited about it as the day is near. I would have liked to go to some other cities like Cologne, Baden Baden, Dresden, etc., but don't want to spread myself too thin so this trip is limited to the few main cities on the east part of the country.

Porsche and Benz museums are worth it. I go to Stuttgart on business at least once a year and I always manage to sneak a visit to Porsche and MB museums in the itinerary. MB museum is amazing and not one to miss. If you appreciate machinery of any kind, the MB museum is worth the visit. Porsche Museum an enthusiasts dream. A wonderful place!
On my next trip I plan to make the drive to Pfaffenhausen to visit the birthplace of my RT12.

You can easily do the Porsche and Mercedes museums in the same day with plenty of time to spare.
The Porsche museum is very good, but it's easily done in two hours. The Mercedes musuem is huge, about 5-10 times the size and has a just amazing variety of vehicles from really old, to trucks to race-cars from all formulas. It really is worth the visit.

Dachau is incredible. If you really want to make it special get a guide. If you're in Munich contact Mike's bike tours. He's an American living in Munich that rents bikes/tours etc. I think I was staying at the Mandarin and his shop is right around the corner. Trust me, you won't regret it. We had a 22 yr old from Ireland that was absolutely incredible. His knowledge was astonishing.
You can certainly just walk around Dachau but to have someone there explain it from a prisoners perspective - we were walked thru just as prisoners were - It was one of the great experiences of my life.
Can, sounds like a fun trip. I've been to Neuschwanstein a few times. It's ok, very touristy. You won't spend much time there. Rothenburg is fun especially the crime and punishment museum. Great stretch of autobahn between rothenburg and Stuttgart.

1. Guided tour of Dachau: Is this what you did - the 2 1/2 hour tour offered by the visitior center? http://www.kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.d..._visitors.html
2. Mike's Bike Tour looks very interesting, thanks. Did they provide helmets and did you ride in bike lanes or among car traffic? In other words, it's plenty safe?
